Where were they radicalized? No answer is complete without addressing evangelical churches and schooling. As I like to say, however, the Christian Right has been doing “alternative facts” since before it was cool. It would be remiss of us to approach the “where were they radicalized” question without addressing how the Christian schooling and homeschooling movement, along with many white churches and other evangelical, LDS, and ‘trad’ Catholic institutions, fostered the subcultures that created the demand for hyper-partisan “news” outlets like Fox News.

Gun sales on the rise amid pandemic uncertainty, Biden's vow for gun reform. A record number of background checks were performed in the past year, according to data released by the FBI, reaching over 39.6 million background checks for firearms in 2020. And while there’s no official data on exactly how many guns are sold in the U.S., background checks serve as a good proxy, according to Adam Winkler, Author of the book "Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America."

Say you had a colleague who flagrantly violated the very clear company policy of not bringing a firearm into work and, when reprimanded about it, was like “F--k you, I’ll pack heat wherever and whenever I want, including during your presentation to the board of directors, Carol.”...Or another who, you learned one day while scrolling on your phone, had liked a Facebook post calling for you to be shot in the head and also posted a video online saying you should be executed. You’d probably report those coworkers to H.R. and expect that they’d be fired, rather than be told that you need to figure out how to work with them and that bringing up all the times they called for your violent murder was really unproductive and a sign you’re not a team player whose quarterly review would reflect that. You’d probably be like, “Wait, what? Are you joking? Did you not hear about the guns and all the times they said they wanted me dead?” Anyway, now you have a small idea of what Congress is presently like for Democrats.

You have to be extremely online to understand the threat America faces now. But if you weren't online — sorry, like, Online online — in the lead-up to the riots, you would've had no idea that it was possible. It's not that regular people, the un-Online, are at fault. Large swaths of media and news sources missed the chance to explain just how dangerous this all was. How deadly it could prove...Extremism online isn't silo'd off from you. It doesn't matter who you are. But if you rely on Sunday news shows, cable TV, or front-page stories for your info — maybe if you're of an older generation — you probably don't get that fact. Again, using QAnon as an example, the coverage of the cult-like movement leading up to the 2020 election mostly did not reflect the severity of what was taking place.

Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine is 66% effective in global trial, but 85% effective against severe disease, company says. The vaccine's efficacy against moderate and severe disease ranged from one country to another: 72% in the US, 66% in Latin America and 57% in South Africa. This was measured starting one month after the shot...But for Mammen, the key result was how effective the vaccine was at preventing severe disease -- regardless of variant or age group...From one month after the shot, all hospitalizations and deaths occurred in the placebo group. — That’s a big deal.

The richest 20% of America are the real pandemic supersavers. During the worst year for economic recovery since 1946, Americans socked away money at a historically high pace. But those savings largely stayed in the pockets of higher earners, while everyone else held close to nothing by the end of 2020.

Americans have long had a reputation for treating other countries as their personal playgrounds, and the pandemic hasn’t changed that. But why are some travelers behaving like the pandemic doesn’t exist in the first place, endangering both themselves and the communities they visit? Manly says it all comes down to emotional maturity. “Some people,” she says, “confuse being free with not being accountable.” It’s similar to the mindset of the kind of people who maintain their own homes beautifully but trash hotel rooms when they travel. “For some people, they like to have an excuse to shirk personal responsibility — and unfortunately, often when we do that, we are impacting other people.”

Manaus is collapsing again. Is a new coronavirus variant to blame? Four epidemiologists told CNN that a new coronavirus variant, called P.1, is likely driving the new round of devastation that's befallen Manaus. "I'm usually not an alarmist about these kinds of things, but I'm concerned about what we are seeing in Brazil right now," said Scott Hensley, a viral immunologist at the University of Pennsylvania. Scientists say the new version of the virus originated in Brazil, and though there is a lot still to be learned about it, there are multiple causes for concern.

How Covid-19 mutations are changing the pandemic. The emergence of the Brazilian P1 variant raises concerns that the virus may be developing an increased propensity for re-infecting individuals, according to the US's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Virus variant from South Africa detected in US for 1st time. The mutated version of the virus, first identified in South Africa, was found in two cases in South Carolina. Public health officials said it’s almost certain that there are more infections that have not been identified yet. They are also concerned that this version spreads more easily and that vaccines could be less effective against it.

How many variants of the coronavirus are there? There are many circulating around the world, but health experts are primarily concerned with the emergence of three.

Does Covid-19 impact male fertility? Experts urge caution about new evidence. "This report provides the first direct evidence to date that COVID-19 infection impairs semen quality and male reproductive potential," the study said.
