And another day of Trump being awful, SCOTUS, secret plans to eliminate gun laws, Vance’s history of disparaging people without kids, a nationwide abortion ban, the young at higher risks of cancer, and a key contributor to happiness comes to a close:

“Donald Trump is fine when black people are kissing his ass, but when they start asking him serious questions and demanding coherent answers, he shows the signature racism and misogyny that have defined most of his pathetic life.” — Bill Auclair

“Forget about ranking him on an awfulness scale for presidents or candidates. He a horrible human. Just a dark, nasty, disgusting, malevolent, cruel, evil human.” -- Ron Filipowski

Trump falsely accuses Harris of deciding to 'turn Black' during a combative panel with Black journalists. The event was combative from the start as Trump and three moderators from the National Association of Black Journalists sparred throughout. “I’ve known her a long time, indirectly,” Trump said. “And she was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I did not know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black.” “I respect either one,” he added, “but she obviously doesn’t, because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden, she made a turn and…she became Black. ... Somebody should look into that too.” “Is she Indian or is she Black?” he asked...Trump was also asked to clarify his comments during the June presidential debate, when he said immigrants were coming to the United States and taking “Black jobs.” “A Black job is anybody that has a job,” he said. “That’s what it is. Anybody that has — they’re taking the employment away from Black people. They’re coming in, and they’re coming in, they’re invading.”...In the days leading up to the NABJ event, there was a whirlwind of controversy from within the organization about whether Trump should have even been invited to talk. Trump in the past has referred to a Black prosecutor as an “animal,” told Black Democratic members of Congress to “go back” to where they came from and referred to Black female journalists as “stupid,” “loser” and “nasty” — comments that in 2019 drew condemnation from NABJ. -- He is disgusting and vile.

White Man Tells Black Journalists His Black Opponent Is Not Black. Former President Donald Trump’s appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists’ annual convention on Wednesday shocked audience members within its opening minutes, as the GOP presidential nominee insulted the moderators—three Black women—claiming their opening question was asked in a “horrible manner.” “You don’t even say, hello, how are you?” Trump said, taking clear offense to a question about his record of denigrating Black people. And then, it only got worse. “Are you with ABC?” Trump continued. “Because I think they’re a fake news network, a terrible network, and I think it’s disgraceful that I came here in good spirit.” -- That this man has so much support is evidence that humanity is on course to extinction.

Biden unveils a proposal to establish term limits for the Supreme Court. President Joe Biden has unveiled a long-awaited proposal for changes at the U.S. Supreme Court, calling on Congress to establish term limits and an enforceable ethics code for the court’s nine justices. He’s also pressing lawmakers to ratify a constitutional amendment limiting presidential immunity.

The inside story of John Roberts and Trump’s immunity win at the Supreme Court. The chief justice’s institutionalist tendency had been cemented over the past two decades. He often talked it up, famously admonishing Trump in 2018 that jurists shed their political affiliation once they take the robe, “We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges. What we have it an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them.” The chief justice, now 69 and about to begin his 20th term, appears to have abandoned his usual institutional concerns. He upended constitutional norms, enlarged the institution of the presidency and gave Trump a victory that bolstered his litigating position even beyond the case at hand, for example, in his attempt to reverse the conviction in his Manhattan “hush money” trial. A jury in May found Trump guilty of falsifying business records...All told, Roberts appears to have reached a turning point.  His vision for the high court became more aggressive, and he has perhaps shed the aura of ineffectualness that permeated some public commentary in recent years. He kept the most important cases for himself, including one that reversed a 1984 precedent giving federal regulators considerable power over health care, food and drug safety, the environment and consumer affairs. (As chief, Roberts makes most opinion-writing assignments; he regularly keeps important cases, but in the past has shared more and evened out assignments among the eight associate justices.) At the same time, his dealings with his conservative colleagues were more agreeable...In their private session on the case the next day, however, the votes on the core issue lacked any ambiguity and Roberts was ready to write with bold strokes that a former president is entitled to presumptive, if not absolute, immunity for all official acts. Further, Roberts’ construction of official acts, as opposed to private ones, was extensive.

The Secret Plan to Strike Down US Gun Laws. Sutherland is much less public about the CDF, which in the half-decade since its rechristening has evolved from spreading the good news to facilitating a far-reaching, multimillion-dollar legal campaign to dismantle America’s gun laws...These lawsuits, aimed at getting an eventual Supreme Court hearing, concern bans on AR-15-style rifles and high-capacity magazines, as well as restrictions on young adults buying and carrying handguns. During its next term, which begins in October, the court will hear one of the suits, a challenge to the government’s ability to check the spread of home-produced, unserialized “ghost guns.”...In short: An anonymous funder or funders is bankrolling a legal attack aimed at providing the conservative majority on the Supreme Court an opportunity to wipe out America’s firearms laws. It’s akin to the Christian right’s abortion playbook but for guns.

Hamas’ top political leader is killed in Iran in strike that risks triggering all-out regional war. Hamas’ top political leader was killed Wednesday by a predawn airstrike in the Iranian capital, Iran and the militant group said, blaming Israel for a shock assassination that risked escalating into an all-out regional war. Iran’s supreme leader vowed revenge against Israel.

Why a Kamala Harris Victory Could Prove Critical for the Health of the Planet. If Harris isn’t elected, Donald Trump has made very clear, over and over again, that he will work to scrap all of President Joe Biden’s hard-fought (and effective) clean-energy and pro-environmental initiatives, while granting fossil-fuel companies carte blanche to spew as many planet-heating gasses as they please. He’s already got a presidential record of ample regulatory rollbacks, international agreements canceled, and oil-industry glad-handing to show for it...Of course, the Biden-Harris administration has been the climate’s best presidential champion in history, but it’s a low, low bar...The promising news is that whichever way Harris spins it, she likely will use her law-enforcement background to go after the oil companies, and they very much seem to understand that. That alone is an important and necessary contrast with Trump.

It’s not just ‘cat ladies’: JD Vance has a history of disparaging people without kids. Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance has a history of making disparaging remarks toward people without children...In November 2020, Vance said on a conservative podcast that childless Americans, especially those in the country’s “leadership class,” were “more sociopathic” than those with children and made the country “less mentally stable.” Vance added that the “most deranged” and “most psychotic” commentators on Twitter – now known as X - were typically childless.

JD Vance Has Supported Criminalizing People Seeking Abortions. Ohio Sen. JD Vance has previously argued against abortion ban exceptions for rape and incest, supported the use of the Comstock Act to criminalize sending abortion medications in the mail, and called for a national abortion ban. “I certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally,” Vance said on a podcast in 2022 when running for the Senate. Add to that his recent support for the use of patients’ medical records by the police to investigate people who travel out of state for abortions. In a letter sent in June 2023 to the head of the US Department of Health and Human Services, Vance and 29 other Republican lawmakers urged HHS to reverse course on its recently finalized rule that protected patients’ reproductive healthcare information from law enforcement, particularly when patients travel to access lawful abortion care. “Abortion is not health care—it is a brutal act that destroys the life of an unborn child and hurts women,” the letter reads. “The Proposed Rule unlawfully thwarts the enforcement of compassionate laws protecting unborn children and their mothers, and directs health care providers to defy lawful court orders and search warrants.” -- So many stupid people. There are many medical reasons where an abortion is necessary. Vote blue and vote these motherfuckers into the dustbin of history.

Here’s How the GOP Platform Could Lead to a Nationwide Abortion Ban. Instead, Hawkins said what leading reproductive rights scholars Mary Ziegler and Rachel Rebouché told me weeks ago: The invoking of the Fourteenth Amendment in the newest GOP platform could grant full citizenship and rights to fetuses—thus offering an avenue to potentially banning abortion nationwide.

Iowa now bans most abortions after about 6 weeks. Four states now ban abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy — before many women know they’re pregnant — and 14 states have near-total bans at all stages of pregnancy.

Purdue president: New Indiana high school diplomas won’t meet admission requirements. Purdue University’s president says Indiana’s proposed changes to high school diplomas do not meet the school’s admission standards in math, social studies and world languages.

What’s Behind Trump’s Plan to “Restore American Beauty”? Of all things to rally behind, are Republicans calling for…prettier buildings? Clues from Trump’s time in office point to yes, actually...But as some academics noted at the time, the use of classical architecture in the US has a fraught history. Reinhold Martin, an architecture professor at Columbia University, told the New York Times in 2020 that Trump’s order, while having no real teeth, was “an effort to use culture to send coded messages about white supremacy and political hegemony.” As my former colleague Camille Squires has reported, there is a long, ugly history of pro-slavery Southerners deploying classical architecture to justify their cause. “Beauty” doesn’t exist in a vacuum...But perhaps the vagueness is the point. Whether intentional or not, by failing to define these terms, the Trump campaign can effectively quell the concerns of many voters who support clean air and water, land conservation, and wildlife protections, while failing to make any real commitments. Of course, without aggressive action at the highest level of government, we risk losing the natural beauty of the country as various environmental crises—climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean acidification, and more—stand to get worse. But hey, at least our buildings will look nice.

FDA approves new blood test to screen for colon cancer. The Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved Guardant Health’s blood test, called Shield, to screen for colon cancer. The test isn't meant to replace colonoscopies, but is generating enthusiasm among doctors who say it has the potential to boost the dismal rate of screenings for the second-highest cause of cancer death in the United States.

Gen X, millennials face higher risk of 17 cancers than older generations. Researchers aren’t sure why but say a combination of factors, including obesity, more sedentary behavior, common medications or chemical exposures, is possible.

Eating more processed red meat is linked to an increased risk of dementia, study suggests. The researchers found that the people in the study who ate at least two servings per week of processed red meat (such as bacon, bologna or hot dogs) had a 14% increased risk of dementia, compared to those who ate less than three servings per month, after the 43-year follow-up period.

Heavy metals, including lead, found in many dark chocolate bars, research shows. “You actually cannot avoid exposure to heavy metals in the diet,” Frame said. “It’s really not about avoiding them; it’s about making sure you’re not getting too much.”

We’ve been wrong about a key contributor to human happiness. But according to new research from Matt Killingsworth, a senior fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, there is an “ever-increasing association between more money and higher happiness.”...In short, Killingsworth said that the income threshold idea wasn’t wrong, per se. But his research suggests that if such a level exists, “it is considerably higher than incomes of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.”

Sunday, July 28, 2024

And another day of not having to ‘vote again,’ Agenda47, racist attacks against Harris, MAGA bogus lawsuits, AI and politics, support slipping for female US president, $1M starter homes, ‘wellness farms,’ a blood test for Alzheimer’s, zyn, and PFAS in condoms and lubes comes to a close:

“You have to get out and vote. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four years, it will be fixed, it will be fine…In four years, you won’t have to vote again.” — Donald Trump (He’s telling you he’s going to be a dictator.)

“I’m giving federal immunity to police officers.” -- Donald Trump (Straight up fascism here.)

Former president implores Christian supporters to vote ‘just this time’, then says he’s not Christian. “You know what? It’ll be fixed! It’ll be fine. You won’t have to vote any more, my beautiful Christians.” At that point, with a slight shake of his head and his right hand pressed against the left side of his chest, Trump said, “I’m not Christian.” But he added: “I love you. Get out – you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don’t have to vote again. We’ll have it fixed so good, you’re not gonna have to vote.”

As Trump creates distance from Project 2025, the conservative Agenda47 comes into focus. While some also proposed solutions that would be ushered in under a conservative president, voters don't have to guess Trump's plans; instead, they can simply head over to his website...Called Agenda47, the campaign materials paint a big picture of what Americans may expect under another Trump presidency...Many of the actions proposed would be achieved through executive order and touch on topics ranging from climate change and education to the economy and immigration...Agenda47, on the other hand, is the official outline for Trump's campaign. -- Be very concerned about his official plans, as well as about his unofficial plans.

The Far Right Has Finally Figured Out How to Hone Its Racist Attack on Kamala Harris. Kat dissects how this innocuous little acronym [DEI] became the latest dog whistle for Fox News hosts and elected Republicans, drawing parallels to Nixon’s Southern strategy, which also deployed coded language to appeal to old bigotry. Earlier attempts to caricature Kamala Harris caught right-wing pundits somewhat flat-footed, when compared to their other misogynistic masterpiece: their attacks on Hillary Clinton (a phenomenon documented by Kat in her first video for Mother Jones). But in the days since Harris locked up enough delegates to be the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee, talking heads have filled the airwaves with what is now considered a three-letter epithet, twisted by figures like Tucker Carlson and Charlie Kirk to mean people who got jobs even though they are talentless and incompetent, especially from minority groups. Harris is their new prime example.

The GOP’s Secret Weapon for 2024? Bogus Lawsuits. More curious than these alarming numbers—and the implications of voter fraud—was how the party came up with them. To estimate registration rates in each county, the RNC compared voter data from the secretary of state to a US census dataset that averaged populations over five years. The census data does not account for the tens of thousands of people who migrated to Nevada during the pandemic. More crucially, it often misses people who are lawfully registered to vote but temporarily residing elsewhere—such as college students and military service members. The RNC’s lawyers also, at one point, projected what they thought Nevada’s voting registration should be by extrapolating from a census survey of 54,000 Americans nationwide, not Nevadans specifically...“This is comparing apples to orangutans.”...However math-challenged, the RNC’s organized and well-financed legal approach is a sea change from 2020, when the party’s effort to hijack the Oval Office was frenzied and reactionary...“These claims are designed not to change policy between now and November, or to change administrative procedure in elections between now and November,” says David Becker, executive director of the nonpartisan Center for Election Innovation and Research, “but to seed the ground or claims that an election was stolen.” -- MAGA can only cheat their way into power because they know most Americans are not in favor of what they have planned for the country.

A manipulated video shared by Musk mimics Harris’ voice, raising concerns about AI in politics. The video gained attention after tech billionaire Elon Musk shared it on his social media platform X on Friday evening without explicitly noting it was originally released as parody. The video uses many of the same visuals as a real ad that Harris, the likely Democratic president nominee, released last week launching her campaign. But the video swaps out the voice-over audio with another voice that convincingly impersonates Harris.

Number of Americans who say US ready for female president dipping: Survey. While the respondents said that both Trump and Harris are equally qualified for the job, with 49 percent saying they are, voters are hesitant about the idea of a female president — 54 percent of the country says they are ready for a woman president and 30 percent said they aren’t. That number is down from 2015, when an Economist/YouGov poll found 63 percent of voters were ready for a woman president. That survey was taken in May of that year, just a month after Hillary Clinton declared her candidacy for president, and a month before she became the first woman to secure a major party’s presidential nomination. As Harris contends to be the second to do so, gender may serve as a significant roadblock. Forty-one percent of Americans assume that more than half of their fellow countrymen would not be willing to vote for a woman over a man if the two candidates are equally qualified.

Covid surges in US as unequal access plagues vaccination and treatment rates. Covid is surging across the US, with levels of the virus on track to exceed last summer’s wave nationally and approaching the peak of last winter’s wave in the west, according to wastewater data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Yet vaccination and antiviral uptake, plagued by inequitable access, have remained low, and other precautions like mask-wearing are being met with increasing resistance...The summer surge comes as some federal and state policies have pulled away from efforts that can stop the spread of the virus, experts say.

California’s largest wildfire explodes in size as fires rage across US West. More than 110 active fires covering 2,800 square miles (7,250 square kilometers) were burning in the U.S. on Friday, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Some were caused by the weather, with climate change increasing the frequency of lightning strikes as the region endures record heat and bone-dry conditions.

Elon Musk's transgender daughter, in first interview, says he berated her for being queer as a child. Vivian Jenna Wilson, the transgender daughter of Elon Musk, said Thursday in her first interview that he was an absent father who was cruel to her as a child for being queer and feminine...Wilson said that, for as long as she could remember, Musk hasn’t been a supportive father. She said he was rarely present in her life, leaving her and her siblings to be cared for by their mother or by nannies even though Musk had joint custody, and she said Musk berated her when he was present. “He was cold,” she said. “He’s very quick to anger. He is uncaring and narcissistic.”

Why fewer people are choosing to have kids. The proportion of adults in the United States younger than 50 years old who do not have children is growing — leaping from 37% in 2018 to 47% in 2023, according to a new Pew Research Center survey published Thursday...There were many reasons why people said they didn’t have kids, including financial concerns, infertility, or that it just didn’t happen, according to the research. For people younger than 50, the top reason reported for not having children was that they don’t want to...“It is completely normal and valid to not want to have children.”...“It is a myth that everyone, especially women, want to have children.”

A $1 million starter home is now the norm in more than 200 US cities. A Thursday report from Zillow indicates that a typical starter home is now worth $1 million or more in 237 cities, up from 84 cities in 2019, underscoring America’s ongoing home affordability crisis.

Justice Department says TikTok collected US user views on issues like abortion and gun control. The Justice Department warned, in stark terms, of the potential for what it called “covert content manipulation” by the Chinese government, saying the algorithm could be designed to shape content that users receive...The concern, the Justice Department said, is more than theoretical, alleging that TikTok and ByteDance employees are known to engage in a practice called “heating” in which certain videos are promoted in order to receive a certain number of views. While this capability enables TikTok to curate popular content and disseminate it more widely, U.S. officials posit it can also be used for nefarious purposes.

Alzheimer’s blood test catches 90% of early dementia cases, study finds. In comparison, neurologists and other memory specialists correctly diagnosed Alzheimer’s in 73% of their cases. Primary care doctors had even less success, with only a 61% accuracy rate, according to the study.

RFK Jr. Wants to Send People Addicted to Antidepressants to Government “Wellness Farms”. In a virtual event last week that was billed as a “Latino Town Hall,” presidential candidate and anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. unveiled his plan to overhaul addiction treatment programs. Speaking during a live recording of the Latino Capitalist podcast, Kennedy described opioid, antidepressant, and ADHD “addicts” receiving treatment on tech-free “wellness farms,” where they would spend as much as three or four years growing organic produce...Cell phones and other screens, he said, would be prohibited. “We’re going to re-parent people and restore connection to community,” he promised...The range of people receiving such treatment could potentially include wide swaths of the population, since the wellness farms wouldn’t just be for people addicted to illegal drugs, but also for people who are taking antidepressants and ADHD medications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 11 percent of Americans ages 12 and older take antidepressants, and about 4 percent of Americans between the ages of five and 64 take medication for ADHD. -- This man deserves zero votes. None. Nada. Zilch. Zippo. He needs to be relegated to the dustbin of history.

Some condom and lubricant brands contain alarming levels of PFAS – study. Toxic ‘forever chemicals’ linked to low birth weight, reduced sperm counts and infertility...“It is chemically certain that the female reproductive tract will be contaminated by some of the chemicals in condoms.”

Technology’s grip on modern life is pushing us down a dimly lit path of digital land mines. It’s a tell-tale moment — one that illustrates the digital pitfalls looming in a culture that takes the magic of technology for granted until it implodes into a horror show that exposes our ignorance and vulnerability. “We are utterly dependent on systems that we don’t even know exist until they break,” said Paul Saffo, a Silicon Valley forecaster and historian. “We have become a little bit like Blanche DuBois in that scene from ‘A Streetcar Named Desire,’ where she says, ‘I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.’ ”...All of the key players still tend to put a higher priority on the pursuit of profit than a commitment to quality, said Isak Nti Asar, co-director of the cybersecurity and global policy program at Indiana University. “We have built a cult of innovation, a system that says. ‘Get technology into people’s hands as quick as possible and then fix it when you find out you have a problem,’” Nti Asar said. “We should be moving slower and demanding better technology instead of giving ourselves up to these feudal lords.”...But it’s becoming increasingly untenable to toggle back to the analog and early digital era of 30 or 40 years ago when more tasks were done manually and more records were handled on pen and paper. If anything, technology appears destined to become even more pervasive now that artificial intelligence seems poised to automate more tasks, including potentially writing the code for software updates that will be checked by a computer — that will be overseen by another computer to make sure it’s not malfunctioning.

Big Tobacco may have its biggest new hit since cigarettes. Governments around the world have tried to kill the tobacco industry. Zyn, the brand of flavored oral nicotine pouches that comes in small, round containers resembling breath mints, is its latest strategy. While it’s ultimately owned by tobacco giant Philip Morris International, Zyn is a tobacco-free product. White pouches similar in size to a piece of chewing gum send more nicotine than what’s in a cigarette right into the bloodstream. Unlike traditional chewing tobacco, you don’t have to chew the pouches or spit the build-up of tobacco juice.

Thursday, July 25, 2024

And another day of getting as ‘ugly and bigoted as they can,’ JD Vance, the US economy, ‘microschools,’ diabetes, and boneless chicken wings can have bones comes to a close:

“It’s worth noting how different men with power behave. President Biden had all the power in the world and gave it up. He passed it on. He’s reminding us what strong, brave men do.” -- Maria Shriver

"I think you should get a one year jail sentence if you do anything to desecrate the American flag. Now, people will say, "Oh, it's unconstitutional.' Those are stupid people. Those are stupid people that say that." -- Donald Trump on Fox & Friends (7-25-2024)

“Criticizing “childless women” while taking away IVF, is the kind of Olympic-level hypocrisy we’ve come to expect from the GOP.” -- John Pavlovitz

“Imagine the media treatment of Kamala if she had five children by three different men. Then add in having sex with a porn star.” -- Mark Elliot

Republican attacks on Kamala Harris to get ‘as ugly and bigoted as they can’. For Barack Obama there was “birtherism” and a name they said sounded like a specific Middle East terrorist. For Hillary Clinton there was “Lock her up” and merchandise that said, “Trump that bitch”, “Hillary sucks but not like Monica” and “Life’s a bitch: don’t vote for one.” Rightwing playbooks deployed in past election campaigns are being dusted off for an all-out assault against Vice-President Kamala Harris, the de facto Democratic nominee aiming to become the first Black woman and first person of south Asian descent to be US president...“The sex attacks will probably be more insidious because they have a racial subtext to them. The same playbook that we saw in 16 we’ll see again and probably even more eagerly because the right wing has gotten more Maga, more extreme in the years since Hillary ran.” Blatant misogyny and racism could alienate the very swing state voters that Trump needs for victory. But even if he is advised to tone down such rhetoric, an entire army of influencers and pundits are ready to flood the zone on his behalf. Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman and Tea Party activist turned Trump critic, said: “Trump himself is going to have a hard time running against her because he doesn’t know how to deal with someone like her. But Trump’s cheerleaders in the media know exactly what to do and they’ll go down this ugly, sexist, racist road. “They’ll make up stuff about how Kamala Harris rose in her career. Their key to winning – and I know this because I used to do some of this – is to get as ugly and bigoted as they can to implicitly and explicitly get people pissed off about who she is.” -- It’s all MAGA know how to do. The only other thing they have to run on is Project 2025, which is a whole bunch of stuff most Americans do not want.

Bibi Goes MAGA. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has an overt alliance with the American right. Netanyahu purported to address everyone. But he was primarily talking to his US constituency. That is not just US Jews anymore. It is conservatives. Netanyahu appealed to GOP voters likely to embrace his call for complete, preemptive US support for any of Israel’s actions—no matter how many civilians are killed—along with his contention that any criticism of the war is antisemitic, funded by Iran, or both...Netanyahu’s increasingly overt alliance with the American right has been mirrored by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which has become one of the top sources channeling money from Republican donors to attack progressive Democrats in primaries...The crescendo of Netanyahu’s speech Wednesday was an insistence that US and Israeli interests are wholly aligned. “Our enemies are your enemies,” he said. “Our fight is your fight. And our victory will be your victory.” He didn’t mean it this way, but it was easy to imagine the enemies he had in mind included Democrats, and the victory he hoped for might come in November.

J.D. Vance has made it impossible for Trump to run away from Project 2025. He wrote the foreword for a new book by Project 2025’s architect — and has backed some of its most extreme ideas. Kevin Roberts, the self-proclaimed “head” of Project 2025, has a book coming out in September — and the book’s foreword is written by Trump’s vice presidential candidate, J.D. Vance, who lavishly praises its ideas.

What to know about Project 2025’s plan for agriculture, and how it could lead to ‘real chaos’. Because the odds are stacked against such reforms, “there’s a tendency to laugh this off, to say, ‘It’s a fever dream from a think tank,’” agricultural economist Jonathan Coppess of the University of Illinois told The Hill. “But it’s not their success that we should be concerned about. It’s failure while getting super creative and trying. That’s what leads to real chaos,” Coppess said. Here are the highlights of what Project 2025 wants to accomplish in the farm sector; why realizing those goals would be difficult; and what could happen if right-wing appointees were to try anyway.

Trump is back to insulting his opponents despite reported transformation. So much for the new Donald Trump. -- He is who he is and has always been. That will never change.

J.D. Vance Endorsed Book That Calls Progressives “Unhumans” and Praises Jan. 6 Rioters. The GOP veep candidate embraced the extreme view that today’s left is part of a centuries-long effort to “destroy” civilization.

The US economy is pulling off something historic. America’s economy is about to stick what’s called a “soft landing,” which is when inflation returns to the Fed’s target without a recession — a feat that’s only happened once, during the 1990s, according to some economists.

Palestinian Olympic threat video fake of possible Russian origin: sources, experts. A video that has been widely shared on social media showing a purported Palestinian militant threatening attacks on France during the Olympic Games in Paris is a fake and could be of Russian origin, security sources and experts said on Thursday.

Newsom orders California state agencies to start clearing homeless encampments. California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered state agencies Thursday to start removing homeless encampments on state land in his boldest action yet following a Supreme Court ruling allowing cities to enforce bans on sleeping outside in public spaces...Under Newsom’s direction, state agencies — including state parks and the department of transportation — would be required to prioritize clearing encampments that pose safety risks, such as those along waterways. Officials should give “reasonable” advance notice to homeless people, offer to connect them to local services and help store their belongings for at least 60 days. Local cities and counties are urged to adopt similar protocols.

J.D. Vance didn’t have sex with a couch. But he’s still extremely weird. The rumors were easy to believe, especially when the potential VP has such terrible ideas about sex...Vance already held extreme views on sex and gender; he opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest and has compared it to slavery. He has voted against a bill ensuring access to IVF and suggested a ban on porn. He called universal child care “a class war against normal people.” He opposes legislating codifying the right to gay marriage and suggested that people in “violent” marriages shouldn’t get divorced. He is also among the nebulous group of young intellectual conservatives backed by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Peter Thiel loosely called the “New Right,” whose main project seems to be making techno-fascist and incel-adjacent ideas seem cool and edgy.

‘Microschools’ could be the next big school choice push. Florida is on the cutting edge. Florida just enacted a little-noticed provision that would make it much easier for these schools — which typically have less than 30 students — to get established...Microschool is a broad term, but these schools typically enroll fewer than 30 students and are often led by one teacher. They can essentially pop up anywhere, like an office building or housing development, and can be run by entities varying from small businesses to co-ops to private schools.

More than 100,000 Americans with diabetes have limbs amputated each year. This is a crisis. About 38 million Americans have diabetes, and each year a staggering 154,000 Americans will suffer amputations, roughly 80% of which will be the result of complications from diabetes. Their life expectancy following this procedure is five years; the probability of a second amputation is up to 35%. By comparison, a total of 1,700 American soldiers had limbs removed since 2002 due to injuries sustained during combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Consumers cannot expect boneless chicken wings to actually be free of bones, a divided Ohio Supreme Court ruled Thursday, rejecting claims by a restaurant patron who suffered serious medical complications from getting a bone stuck in his throat...In a 4-3 ruling, the Supreme Court said Thursday that “boneless wings” refers to a cooking style, and that Berkheimer should’ve been on guard against bones since it’s common knowledge that chickens have bones. The high court sided with lower courts that had dismissed Berkheimer’s suit. -- The world we live in.

And another day of passing the torch, MAGA leaders urging colleagues to not be overtly racist, Trump’s remarks about disabled people, MI outlawing the ‘gay and trans panic defense,’ and 100% protection against HIV comes to a close:

“I revere this office, but I love my country more.” -- President Joe Biden

“Today is one of the darkest days for US Congress as war criminal/Trump's BFF Benjamin Netanyahu addresses Congress. Both Trump and Netanyahu should already be in prison.” -- Dean Obeidallah

In Heartfelt Address, Biden Passes the Torch—and Reminds Us What’s at Stake. The remarks, heartfelt and unifying in tone, appeared to succinctly punctuate a decades-long career devoted to public office. Biden continued by praising Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he had endorsed to replace him on the presidential ticket, calling Harris “tough” and “an incredible partner.” He also framed Harris as deeply consequential to maintaining US democracy. “We have to decide: do we still believe in honesty, decency, respect, freedom, justice, and democracy? In this moment, can we see those we disagree with not as enemies but as fellow Americans? Can we do that? Does character in public life still matter?”

‘Our republic is now in your hands’: Biden appeals to Americans to ‘preserve our democracy’. It is rare for a president to relinquish power voluntarily, without the force of rejection by the electorate or the limits of the Constitution. Biden, who acceded to heavy pressure from within his own party to step aside as a candidate, cast his choice as one made in the interest of the nation and called on Americans to join him to "preserve our democracy." He and other Democrats consistently argue that former President Donald Trump, whose refusal to concede after he lost the 2020 election to Biden culminated in a mob attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an effort to stop the certification process, is a threat to democracy.

Fact check: Netanyahu falsely claims there have been ‘practically’ no civilian fatalities in Rafah, besides one incident. Netanyahu may have been told that, but the claim itself is verifiably false: Multiple strikes in Rafah have resulted in civilian casualties.

Republican leaders urge colleagues to steer clear of racist and sexist attacks on Harris. Republican leaders are warning party members against using overtly racist and sexist attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris, as they and former President Donald Trump’s campaign scramble to adjust to the reality of a new Democratic rival less than four months before Election Day. -- If you have to tell your members not to be “overtly” racist or sexist, then your entire party is racist and misogynistic. And “overtly”? Really? So it’s okay if your members are racist and misogynistic in secrecy? What a shitty fucking party.

Trump Said Some Disabled People “Should Just Die,” According to His Nephew. In a Time excerpt of his forthcoming book All in the Family, Fred Trump revealed a disturbing conversation with the then-president following a White House meeting in which he discussed how expensive caring for people with complex disabilities can be. Donald Trump said of some disabled people, his nephew recounted, “The shape they’re in, all the expenses, maybe those kinds of people should just die.” Time said that it had reached out to Donald Trump for comment about his nephew’s allegations but received no response. It wasn’t the only concerning conversation Trump’s nephew alleged that they had. When a Trump family medical fund for William’s medical and living expenses was running low, Fred said his uncle told him, “He doesn’t recognize you. Maybe you should just let him die and move down to Florida.”

Michigan outlaws the ‘gay and trans panic defense’ in criminal trials. Michigan has outlawed the so-called gay and trans panic defense, which allows criminal defense attorneys to use a victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity as a defense argument. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, signed House Bill 4718 into law Tuesday. The legislation states that an individual’s “actual or perceived sex, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation” is not admissible in a criminal trial to “demonstrate reasonable provocation,” “show that an act was committed in a heat of passion” or “support a defense of reduced mental capacity.” In a statement shared on Tuesday, the governor’s office said the bill “significantly expands” protections for the LGBTQ community “by protecting them from violent acts of discrimination, prejudice, and hate crimes.” -- Yay, Michigan! That whole ‘gay and trans panic defense’ is complete bullshit. Abolish it everywhere. Michigan is just the 20th state to prohibit that absurd defense strategy.

World breaks hottest day record twice in a week. Parts of the world are experiencing powerful heatwaves including the Mediterranean, Russia and Canada. Climate change is driving up global temperatures as greenhouse gas emissions released when humans burn fossil fuels warm the Earth's atmosphere.

Wildfires across western U.S. and Canada force thousands to evacuate. The U.S. Forest Service is at “the highest level of wildfire response possible,” as western forests grapple with record-breaking dry timber conditions.

Inflation, $2,000 camps are creating a summer crisis for working parents: 'It is complete chaos'. American families now spend nearly one-fifth of their income, an average of $800 per month, on child care, the Federal Reserve reports.

A twice-yearly injection offers 100% protection against HIV, study suggests. There were no infections in the young women and girls that got the shots in a study of about 5,000 in South Africa and Uganda, researchers reported. In a group given daily prevention pills, roughly 2% ended up catching HIV from infected sex partners. “To see this level of protection is stunning.”

NASA telescope spots a super Jupiter that takes more than a century to go around its star. The planet is roughly the same diameter as Jupiter, but with six times the mass. Its atmosphere is also rich in hydrogen like Jupiter’s. One big difference: It takes this planet more than a century, possibly as long as 250 years, to go around its star. It’s 15 times the distance from its star than Earth is to the sun.
