March 5, 2018

Some days you wake up and go to work or school or whatever, maybe hang with your family, friends, or lovers, or maybe just be alone for the day, enjoying the peace and tranquility of solitude, while nothing exciting happens outside your own private world--nothing too out of the ordinary--and your left thinking “I’m so glad the world is doing fine; I’m so pleased it was just another boring day.” Today, however, is not one of those days. Today is one of those days you just have to shut it all down and then go home and go to sleep. Otherwise, it’ll never be another day that comes to a close:

“Politics and personal relationships are no longer separate. Your political views reflect who you are as a person, and how you believe other people should be treated.” -- Kendi King

Former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg has been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury. On live television he dares Mueller to arrest him: “I think it would be funny if they arrested me.” But because these are the times we’re in, he says more: “Screw that. Why do I have to go? Why? For What?” Then we get these gems: “Mueller thinks Trump is the Manchurian candidate, and “Yes I believe Carter Page was colluding with the Russians.” Holy shit. He also said he believes Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting with the Russians well in advance of the date of the meeting. Wow. Just, wow. All in a day of some backwards ass reality show we call America.

By the end of the day, Nunberg says he’ll likely cooperate with Mueller. Probably a good idea, moron.

What Donald Trump understands about mconservatism. “In 2015, the Census Bureau estimated that, for the first time, a majority of US infants were nonwhite. If current trends hold, America will be a majority-minority nation by 2044. Trump’s conservatism reflects fears of this changing America.” The article ends with “What the conservative base feels is being lost has nothing to do with tax rates or regulations. It’s a cultural war, and Trump, unlike many other Republican politicians, is willing to fight it.”

Trump's cabinet officials try to outmaneuver the impulsive president by carefully filtering what foreign policy and military options make it to his desk.

Thoughts and prayers will stop mass shooting ‘evil,’ says Florida state senator. Um, they would’ve stopped them by now. We have plenty of proof that thoughts are prayers are really meaningless in making change.

The Florida state Senate has passed a bill that would raise the age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21 and require a three-day waiting period for gun purchases, with some exceptions. The Florida House is set to take up the bill next.

Ryan splits with Trump as GOP lawmakers move to block planned tariffs. It took tariffs for him to do something? What a horrible person.

Canada and Mexico push back against Trump’s suggestion that steel and aluminum tariffs could be waived if they sign a new and 'fair' NAFTA deal.

How the Middle East is sowing seeds of a second Arab spring.

United Airlines Is Replacing Employee Bonuses With a Lottery. “United Airlines is eliminating quarterly performance bonuses for its employees, and replacing them with something a bit more unconventional: a lottery-style drawing, with prizes including cash, cars, and vacations.” No, really. I can’t make this shit up. Unbelievable.

A Group of Women Just Bought the Weinstein Company. Beautiful.

The bank used by Trump’s personal lawyer to wire $130,000 to former adult-film actress Stormy Daniel flagged the transaction as suspicious and reported it to the Treasury Department. The money was received on October 27, 2016, 12 days before the presidential election. His lawyer, Michael Cohn, complained to friends he had not been reimbursed for the six-figure payment to the former porn star.

Trump name chiseled off the Trump International Hotel in Panama after weeks of tensions over control of the property. It’s a beginning.

Republican Senator from Mississippi, Thad Cochran, says he will resign April 1.

Making America Toxic Again. Scott Pruitt’s job is to protect the environment. Unfortunately, God has other plans for him. His “god” will be the death of us all.

“The Trump Administration is doing whatever it can to allow religious beliefs to dictate patient care. In the Wheaton College case, it’s reversing the government’s position in court and no longer defending the ACA’s birth control benefit.” Of course they did.

The number of children admitted to hospitals for opioid overdose has nearly doubled since 2004, according to a new study.

Washington becomes first state to pass net neutrality protections into law. At the state level, bill essentially reinstates rules the Federal Communications Commission rolled back earlier this year.

Washington state moves to ban gay conversion therapy. “Washington state is one signature away from banning licensed therapists from trying to convert a minor’s sexual orientation.” This should be banned everywhere.

Male escort exposes 36 actively gay priests in a file sent to Vatican containing erotic Whatsapp messages and photos.

Trump ends Obama-era ban on importing sport-hunted elephant trophies on a “case-by-case” basis.

This Mind-Reading AI Tech Is Straight Out Of A Black Mirror Episode. “Psychologists from the University of Toronto have created an AI that can essentially read your mind with astonishing accuracy.”

The Misguided Drive to Measure ‘Learning Outcomes.’ “Here is the second irony: Learning assessment has not spurred discussion of the deep structural problems that send so many students to college unprepared to succeed. Instead, it lets politicians and accreditors ignore these problems as long as bureaucratic mechanisms appear to be holding someone — usually a professor — accountable for student performance...Here is the third irony: The value of universities to a capitalist society depends on their ability to resist capitalism, to carve out space for intellectual endeavors that don’t have obvious metrics or market value.”

Flippy, a robot that can reportedly grill 150 burgers per hour, has taken up a cook position at Caliburger's in Pasadena, California. Trade and immigration aren’t eliminating jobs.Technology is.

The Oscars, Grammys and Super Bowl appear no longer immune to the effect of dwindling TV viewership. Good. Because none of that shit matters.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” -- Edmund Burke

Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.

Until next time, my friends. Good night.
