“He deems an election legitimate if he wins and rigged if he loses. It is that simple. Logic, evidence, protocol and shame have no relevance here. It's about raw power, and defenders of democracy should prepare accordingly -- and never give in to his fabricated reality.” — Sarah Kendzior

‘Raw exposed nerves’: Anxious nation awaits Election Day. As the traditional Election Day closes in, Americans are exhausted from constant crises, on edge because of volatile political divisions and anxious about what will happen next. Their agony is not in deciding between President Donald Trump or his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden. Most made that choice long ago. Instead, voters arriving in record numbers to cast early ballots say basic democratic foundations feel suddenly brittle: Will their vote count? Will the loser accept the result? Will the winner find a way to repair a fractured, sick and unsettled nation? -- And for the record, this all happened within four years of Trump as president. That speaks volumes.
Biden Got It Right: The 2020 Race Is About the Soul of the Nation. Joe Biden adopted this as his catchphrase when he entered the campaign. But whether he were in the race or not, this shorthand would have aptly framed the contest. Since moving into the White House, Donald Trump, the first reality-show president, has debased the country with his bigotry, divisiveness, and demagoguery. And to make literally everything worse, his brazen incompetence, willful ignorance, and pathological narcissism shaped an inept response to a national disaster that has resulted in over 230,000 American deaths and widespread economic calamity affecting millions. The driving question of 2020 had to be: would the voters of the United States accept this? What would it say about the country if they did?...For tens of millions of voters, his deadly negligence and incompetence, as well as his assaults on fundamental democratic and civil values, were not disqualifications. They relished his dark and perverted view of the world. They were jazzed by his race-baiting. They were moved by his fear-mongering. They bought his paranoid and outlandish conspiracy theories (the Deep State was after him, doctors were hyping COVID death numbers to make money). They cheered his crudeness and cruelty. They got a rush from his attacks on experts. Moreover, they believed him. Whatever he said. And they were willing to follow Trump down his trail of egotism and idiocy...The darkness infecting the country extended to an entire political party that was no longer the GOP that Biden fondly recalled—and to millions of Americans who had accepted and craved the know-nothingism and hostility of Trump and Trumpism...What is being tested in this election is whether the Trump infection and this democracy’s slide toward authoritarianism and kleptocracy can be beaten back. Trump and Biden are on the ballot, but the nation’s character is on the line.
“I am writing this not for those who oppose him, but for those who support him, because Trump and his backers are going to hurt you too.... You do not deserve what is going to happen to you.” — Sarah Kendzior
Americans, fearing post-election violence, are eyeing each other with suspicion. Hardly anyone, Trump and Biden backers alike, would lash out even if they feel the election was stolen, but most think the other side won’t show the same restraint. The mutual mistrust is itself a powder keg. And in fact, 3% to 4% from each side refuses to rule out violence, despite the social stigma of telling that to a pollster.

“GOP wants a one-party state, and Donald Trump wants to be the autocrat of that state. The idea that they are incompetent is a myth. They are very competent. They are just not interested in the process of governing. They are interested in ruling." — Sarah Kendzior
Federal judge rejects GOP challenge to invalidate nearly 127,000 votes in Democratic-leaning Houston. Hanen, an appointee of President George W. Bush, rejected the Republicans' arguments on a technical matter, but also said he would have ruled against them since the lawsuit was filed well after thousands of people had voted.

A Christian Foster Home Had a Troubling Past. Trump Gave It Millions to House Immigrant Kids Anyway. Billions of taxpayer dollars have gone to organizations running shelters to house these unaccompanied children, who are required by law to be put in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services within 72 hours of being detained near the border. But poor federal oversight and new rules favoring conservative Christian providers mean that children could end up in shelters that actively impose their religious beliefs—and that have troubling records of improper and excessive discipline.
Facebook cracks down on QAnon hashtag #SaveOurChildren.
