And another day of imperiling democracy, suffering ‘brain disease,’ youth spreading Covid-19, rapidly spreading variants, seeking blanket preemptive pardons, believing false accounts about the riot, and AR legislators make it clear trans youth have no place in their state comes to a close:

Yes, the Georgia election law is that bad. The debate over whether Georgia’s law really suppresses voting reveals just how imperiled American democracy is. The fundamental truth about SB 202 is this: Its very existence is predicated on a lie. The bill’s passage was motivated by unfounded claims of fraud in the Georgia presidential elections — lies that Donald Trump spread and continues to spread, with the help of both state and national Republicans...The problem with discussing Georgia’s law solely in the narrow terms of what this or that provision does is that it implicitly concedes that the law is a reasonable enterprise to begin with: that the rationale for its passage is legitimate rather than an effort to further a fraudulent and dangerous narrative...By passing SB 202, Georgia’s Republicans are merely ratifying their own lie...A new working paper by the University of Washington’s Jake Grumbach attempted to measure the health of democracy in all 50 states between 2000 and 2018. The findings were unambiguous: Republican control over state government was correlated with large and measurable declines in the health of a state’s democracy.

A third of Covid-19 survivors suffer 'brain disease,' study shows. They found 34% of Covid-19 survivors received a diagnosis for a neurological or psychological condition within six months of their infection.

Nearly half of new US virus infections are in just 5 states. Nearly half of new coronavirus infections nationwide are in just five states — a situation that is putting pressure on the federal government to consider changing how it distributes vaccines by sending more doses to hot spots. New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey together reported 44% of the nation’s new COVID-19 infections, or nearly 197,500 new cases, in the latest available seven-day period.

Youth sports and other extracurriculars are spreading Covid-19, health officials say. "We know that these increases are due, in part, to more highly transmissible variants, which we are very closely monitoring.”

Canadian public health officials say a rapidly spreading variant likely has now replaced the original Covid-19 virus in many parts of the country, and new variants are making younger people sicker and sending more to the hospital.

Fossil-fuel firms reaped billions in COVID tax breaks—then laid off thousands. A group of 77 firms involved in the extraction of oil, gas and coal received $8.2 billion under tax-code changes that formed part of a major pandemic stimulus bill passed by Congress last year. Five of these companies also got benefits from the paycheck protection program, totaling more than $30 million. Despite this, almost every one of the fossil-fuel companies laid off workers, with a more than 58,000 people losing their jobs since the onset of the pandemic, or around 16% of the combined workforces.

In the final days of the Trump White House, Rep. Matt Gaetz is said to have asked for blanket pre-emptive pardons for himself and unidentified congressional allies for any crimes they may have committed.

Arkansas legislators override veto, enact transgender youth treatment ban. Arkansas legislators Tuesday made the state the first to ban gender-affirming care for transgender minors, overriding Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson's veto. The law prohibits doctors from providing gender-affirming medical care, such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy, and prevents them from referring minors to other providers.

Half of Republicans believe false accounts of deadly U.S. Capitol riot. Since the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have pushed false and misleading accounts to downplay the event that left five dead and scores of others wounded. His supporters appear to have listened. Three months after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to try to overturn his November election loss, about half of Republicans believe the siege was largely a non-violent protest or was the handiwork of left-wing activists “trying to make Trump look bad,” a new Reuters/Ipsos poll has found. -- "The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” — George Orwell, 1984

Starbucks' experimental new cup costs extra, but it's worth it. Here's how it works: Customers will order their drinks in a reusable cup and pay a $1 refundable deposit. When the customer is done with their drink, they return the cup and receive a $1 credit as their refund plus 10 Bonus Stars for their Starbucks (SBUX) Rewards account. If customers take the cup home, they can also take advantage of Starbucks' partnership with Ridwell, a company that will pick up the reusable cups from your home. Each cup is then cleaned and sanitized and put back into the rotation for another customer to use.
