The history of the US police. From slave patrols to the criminalisation of Black communities, racism has been a feature of US policing for centuries. But the fact remains that in some parts of the US, the police kill Black people at six times the rate they kill white people. For this reason, many in the US believe that it is not possible to reform an institution whose very roots are racist and anti-Black: in the South, after all, the police force originated as a mechanism to capture and brutalise escaped enslaved people…Policing, therefore, became a way “to use state violence in order to advance racial capitalism or to protect racial capitalism from resistance and autonomy.” — Doubtful many Americans know this history.
