And another day of sinking warships, undercounting cases, breath tests, banning abortion in FL and KY, Feinstein losing her memory, police again killing a Black man, Elon Musk tries to buy Twitter, the homeschooling surge continues, and a meteor from another solar system hits Earth comes to a close:
“Funny how Putin keeps losing but uses propaganda and sycophants to claim he’s winning. Sounds familiar, but I can’t place it exactly.” — Dan Rather
“It’s beyond hypocritical that any GOP member of Congress would criticize this president for not doing enough for Ukraine while previously having voted to acquit the former president after his politically-motivated withholding of $391M of Congressionally-approved aid to Ukraine.” — Mike Levin

‘Massive blow for Russian credibility’: Sinking of warship a win for Ukraine, experts say. Ukrainian defense officials said their forces struck the Moskva, a cruiser, with two missiles. Russia said it was an internal munitions fire that forced the evacuation of the crew from its flagship in the Black Sea. While Ukraine’s military claimed the Russian ship leading the blockade of the Black Sea had capsized and was “sinking,” Russia’s defense ministry insisted it was towing the Moskva to port. The Russian Defense Ministry admitted later on Thursday, however, that the ship did sink in choppy waters as they were towing it.
US likely 'dramatically undercounting' current COVID-19 resurgence, experts say. Although officials have been warning for weeks of an impending coronavirus resurgence across the country, health experts say it is impossible to know exactly how widespread the nation’s latest resurgence may actually be, given the declining availability of COVID-19 data…"Underreporting, driven by changes in testing behavior, lack of public interest and severely underfunded local public health departments, create a perfect storm of misleading case counts and hospitalizations." Since last summer, dozens of states, along with federal agencies, have opted to scale back on regular COVID-19 data reporting. A dwindling number of states still offer daily COVID-19 data reports, with most now moving to an alternate-day schedule or even to a weekly schedule. — Just fucking great.
FDA Authorizes Breath Test for COVID-19 Diagnosis. The test is conducted using an instrument the size of "a piece of carry-on luggage" in hospitals, clinics and testing sites, the FDA said in a press release. Each instrument can be used to test 160 samples per day.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a new law that bans almost all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The new 15-week ban does not make exceptions for cases of incest, rape or human trafficking. It does allow an abortion if it would save the life of a pregnant person or prevent serious injury to them.
It’s now practically impossible to get an abortion in Kentucky. Kentucky ended virtually all in-state abortions on Wednesday, enacting a sweeping law that bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, restricts minors’ access to the procedure, and cracks down on medication abortions. It’s now the state with the harshest abortion restrictions in the United States. — It’s painfully obvious Republicans are only interested in controlling the lives of other people. They are not about freedom. They are about control. They are fascists. Let’s stop sugarcoating the fucking thing.
Some things have to be seen and heard to be believed. Holy shit, this guy. He couldn’t think of any other example?
The Republican National Committee on Thursday announced it unanimously voted to require GOP presidential candidates to abstain from presidential debates sanctioned by the Commission on Presidential Debates, which has overseen the process for decades…The RNC will require Republican presidential candidates to sign a pledge that they will only appear at party-sanctioned primary and general election debates, an RNC official confirmed.
Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams loses bid to use same unlimited fundraising state law that benefits Gov. Brian Kemp.
‘Bad and Getting Worse’: Dianne Feinstein Is Losing Her Memory, Concerned Senate Sources Say. The Chronicle spoke to four U.S. senators, including three Democrats, three former members of Feinstein’s staff, and one California Democrat in Congress about how the longtime senator has been losing her memory, that she often fails to recognize colleagues, and that she is no longer able to engage with the job in the way she used to.
Family seeks charges, officer’s ID in Patrick Lyoya’s death. A Michigan police officer fatally shot his eldest son, 26-year-old Patrick, in the head this month following a traffic stop in Grand Rapids. Video released Wednesday shows a brief foot chase and struggle over the white officer’s Taser before he shoots Patrick Lyoya in the head as the Black man is face down on the ground.
Elon Musk says his offer to buy Twitter is about 'the future of civilization,' not making money. "My strong intuitive sense is that having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization."
“Imagine the good $40 billion could do in this world. Making Twitter more of a free-for-all, opening up to ever more unchecked misinformation and manipulation, privately owned by one egomaniac in the name of “free speech,” feels like one of the least good things it could do.” — Jeff Roush
There's no good reason to ban trans women from sports, according to science and experts. If there’s one thing that’s certain in this chaotic world, it’s that scientists know there’s simply no real reason to blanket ban trans athletes from sports.
Georgia county still pursuing spaceport that voters rejected. Officials in a Georgia county are moving ahead with plans to build a launch pad for commercial rockets barely a month after residents voted to halt the project by a margin of nearly 3-to-1. — You don’t matter. Your vote doesn’t matter. They will do whatever they damn well please.
Talk of race, sex in schools divides Americans: AP-NORC poll. Americans are deeply divided over how much children in K-12 schools should be taught about racism and sexuality, according to a new poll released as Republicans across the country aim to make parental involvement in education a central campaign theme this election year. Overall, Americans lean slightly toward expanding — not cutting back — discussions of racism and sexuality, but roughly 4 in 10 say the current approach is about right, including similar percentages across party lines. Still, the poll from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows stark differences between Republicans and Democrats who want to see schools make adjustments.
Homeschooling surge continues despite schools reopening. The coronavirus pandemic ushered in what may be the most rapid rise in homeschooling the U.S. has ever seen. Two years later, even after schools reopened and vaccines became widely available, many parents have chosen to continue directing their children’s educations themselves.
U.S. officials confirm first known interstellar meteor struck Earth in 2014. U.S. officials confirmed Wednesday that a small space rock that traveled through the skies of Papua New Guinea in 2014 before crashing off the northeast coast was in fact a meteor that traveled from another solar system.
Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.
Until next time, my friends. Stay safe and stay sane. Good night.
