And another day of important history, OK passing strictest abortion law, El Salvador giving US a glimpse of the future, monkeypox spreading, a hot weekend for most of US, family size may influence cognitive function, and ‘Dark MAGA' comes to a close:

“Mother (and Fathers) in Oklahoma, ALL FIVE of your GOP Reps voted NO on HR 7790, which  provided $28Million to alleviate the current baby formula shortage. Don't vote for people who are willing to let your babies starve.” -- somuchtodo2

Benjamin Franklin gave instructions on at-home abortions in a book in the 1700s. Benjamin Franklin is revered in history for his fixation on inventing practical ways to make everyday life easier. He was a prolific inventor and author, and spent his life tinkering and writing to share his knowledge with the masses. One of the more surprising areas Franklin wanted to demystify for the average American? At-home abortions…"[The book] starts to prescribe basically all of the best-known herbal abortifacients and contraceptives that were circulating at the time," Farrell said. "It's just sort of a greatest hits of what 18th-century herbalists would have given a woman who wanted to end a pregnancy early." "It's very explicit, very detailed, [and] also very accurate for the time in terms of what was known ... for how to end a pregnancy pretty early on." Including this information in a widely circulated guide for everyday life bears a significance to today's heated debate over access to abortion and contraception in the United States. In particular, the leaked Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade and states that "a right to abortion is not deeply rooted in the nation's histories and traditions." Farrell said the book was immensely popular, and she did not find any evidence of objections to the inclusion of the section. — Because abortion in America is as American as apple pie.

Oklahoma passes strictest abortion ban; services to stop. Oklahoma lawmakers on Thursday approved a bill prohibiting all abortions with few exceptions, and providers said they would stop performing the procedure as soon as the governor signs it in the latest example of the GOP’s national push to restrict access to what has been a constitutional right for nearly a half century. -- Republicans know what they’re doing. They know who all this shit is going to hurt. It won’t be their daughters or mistresses, they’ll still be able to get abortions. No, it’s poor people and POC that Republicans target. It’s poor women and women of color that will die. Everything Republicans support and force upon the American people literally goes back to their support of white supremacy.

Abortion: El Salvador's jailed women offer US glimpse of post-Roe future. ‘Don’t let our reality become your reality,’ campaigners warn after woman is freed after decade behind bars for medical emergency ruled attempted murder…The Salvadorian anti-abortion law, which was subsequently written into the constitution, has led to at least 182 women who suffered an obstetric emergency being prosecuted for abortion or aggravated homicide. Poor, young, women from rural areas with limited access to healthcare have been disproportionately persecuted, with most reported to the police by hospital workers. In many cases, prosecutors and judges have argued that the woman’s failure to save the pregnancy amounted to murder. — Read that again: “the woman’s failure to save the pregnancy amounted to murder.” This is our future. — “I warned them that this law would end the presumption of innocence for pregnant women, which is exactly what happened. It’s this same risk that the US is now facing.”…Herrera added: “Don’t let our reality become your reality. If the law changes, doctors’ hands will be tied and women will die. Do everything you can to stop this because the consequences of losing access to abortion are grave.”…Last week advocates were dismayed when Esme, a 28-year-old from a poor rural community, was sentenced to 30 years for aggravated homicide after suffering a miscarriage – the first woman convicted for an obstetric complication in seven years…María del Rosario was 23 years old when she started haemorrhaging at home alone. Instead of receiving medical help, she was detained by police and sentenced to 30 years for aggravated homicide (later reduced to 20 years). María del Rosario’s pregnancy was the result of rape; her alleged aggressor was acquitted. She has spent a decade in prison…As the US contemplates the reality of a post-Roe world, the Salvadorian experience demonstrates the long-term impact on women who are criminalised. — This is the dark future America will soon suffer, brought to you by the theocratic authoritarian party known as The Republican Party

January 6 committee investigating Capitol tour given by GOP lawmaker on the eve of the insurrection. The House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection said Thursday it has evidence that GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk led a tour of the US Capitol complex the day before pro-Trump rioters stormed the building, according to a letter requesting the Republican lawmaker’s voluntary cooperation with their ongoing probe. The letter notes the committee has reviewed evidence that “directly contradicts” previous claims by Republican lawmakers who said security footage from the days before January 6 shows “[t]here were no tours, no large groups, no one with MAGA hats on” of the US Capitol complex.

Michigan election chief: Trump suggested I be arrested for treason and executed. Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s top election official, faced an onslaught of threats after the 2020 presidential election for refusing to overturn results that showed Joe Biden had won the state. In those hectic weeks, she says she also received an especially disturbing piece of information: President Donald Trump suggested in a White House meeting that she should be arrested for treason and executed. Benson, a Democrat, revealed the alleged remark for the first time in an interview with NBC News. She said she learned of it from a source familiar with Trump’s White House meeting.

Vengeful Madison Cawthorn Vows ‘Dark MAGA’ Takeover.

What Is Dark MAGA? Trump Supporters Attempt Rebrand for 2024. More of a meme than a political slogan, Dark MAGA is a post-alt-right aesthetic that promotes an authoritarian version of Trump in dystopian, Terminator-like images. In some, the Trump Tower is painted entirely in black and the former president is seen piercing through the screen with blue laser eyes…Dark MAGA supporters are calling for a ruthless, unforgiving version of Trump to take revenge on his political enemies at the 2024 election - though the movement hasn't been recognized or endorsed by Trump in any form…Behind the movement there's no single identifiable group, or a clear ideology, GNET said. Many of the messages posted by Dark MAGA supporters incite violence and contain misogynistic and/or racist comments…"The general messaging that the Democrats are evil, that children are under threat, that people may need to take extreme acts, even political violence to protect their children and their values, I think is consistent across the (far-right) spectrum.”…Dark MAGA was born from the alt-right's feeling of having lost power, and seeking to regain that power, at any cost. Dark MAGA posts are far from receiving the same kind of attention that brought similar sorts of political memes to become so relevant in the 2016 election. But in the next two years, things might change.

CDC and Massachusetts health officials investigating monkeypox case. The case of monkeypox was confirmed in a man in Massachusetts who had recently traveled to Canada, state health officials announced earlier in the day…Biddinger said they are not sure how the patient was infected, but emphasized "that historically, this has been a very rare disease, with very rare transmission around the world. What we have seen in the United Kingdom, in Spain and in Europe, has been novel and that gives us cause for concern, but, I think appropriately, people should not be afraid of monkeypox right now." — Which was what was said about Covid in its early days

The symptoms and causes of monkeypox infections, which CDC calls an 'emerging issue'. New cases of monkeypox were reported in the U.K., Spain, Portugal, Italy and the U.S. this week, a rare occurrence for a virus largely confined to central and western Africa.

Billions in COVID relief funds remain unspent by schools as students flee public districts. Enrollment in America's public schools has continued to decline since the beginning of the pandemic, and now reports say districts across the country are struggling to spend large chunks of federal COVID relief funding before it expires...For example, the state of Oregon has only spent about 4.6% of its ARP funds. Washington state has only spent 11.1% of its ARP funding, and has lost 3.8% of its public school student population since the pandemic began. Oklahoma has lost about 6% of its public school student population, and has only spent 10.3% of its ARP funds...Since students are leaving public schools, and public schools receive funding based on the number of enrolled students, there is an increasing possibility school districts will have to lay off teachers and staff when funding evaporates.

GOP directs culture war fury toward green investing trend. Republicans are coming out swinging against Wall Street’s growing efforts to consider factors like long-term environmental risk in investment decisions, the latest indication that the GOP is willing to damage its relationship with big business to score culture war points. -- Republicans are literally trying to kill you.

Over half of the US population will see temperatures at or above 90 degrees this weekend. And it's only May. Although Memorial Day weekend -- the unofficial start of summer -- is still more than a week away, nearly 60% of Americans, or almost 200 million people, will feel 90-degree heat over the next few days.

Female referees to officiate men’s World Cup for 1st time. Female referees will make World Cup history this year by working games at a major men’s tournament for the first time in Qatar. Three female referees and three female assistant referees were announced Thursday by FIFA among 129 officials selected for World Cup duty.

Family Size May Influence Cognitive Functioning in Later Life. A new study by researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the Robert Butler Columbia Aging Center, and Université Paris-Dauphine–PSL, found that having three or more versus two children may have a negative effect on late-life cognition. This effect was strongest in Northern Europe, where higher fertility decreases financial resources but does not improve social resources. This is the first to study the causal effect of high fertility on late-life cognition.

RIP Vangelis. He was 79.

Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.

Until next time, my friends. Stay safe and stay sane. Good night.
