“If you’re a Republican, you can’t even lie to Congress or lie to an FBI agent or they’re coming after you... Of course you’re gonna lie. Everybody lies!” -- Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX)

Arming teachers in the classroom will cost kids' lives. If armed security guards often don't stop shootings, teachers have no chance. Here's why: Instructing a teacher in how to use a gun does very little. Guns aren't magical objects that turn a person into a skilled warrior, no matter how proficient one is at marksmanship. Gun fighting is less about the weapon and more about a state of mind. It's about will. The will to assert yourself over — and kill — your armed adversary who wants to kill you. Developing this mental skill takes months or years of dedicated training, and a singular focus that teachers don't, and shouldn't, have. Teaching someone to handle a gun is a very different skill from teaching them how to fight. People who haven't fought (or at least been trained to fight) often seem to miss this completely. You can teach someone the basics of marksmanship pretty quickly — like how to be safe and how to hit a target. But you can't quickly teach them to fight and kill reflexively and instinctively. Most importantly, you can't quickly train them to stand their ground when faced with a mortal threat. That's a completely different skill.
Uvalde parents and school staffer start legal action against gunmaker. These are the first legal actions taken as a result of the mass shooting, which killed 19 children and two adults. While not full-blown lawsuits, the filings seek to determine if the gun manufacturer can be sued for how it promotes firearms.
Arizona GOP won't even allow a vote on gun background checks. What? Afraid it'll pass? Only 8% of voters oppose requiring all gun buyers to go through a background check. Unfortunately, that 8% seems to include every Republican in the Arizona Legislature. On Tuesday, Senate Republicans blocked a bill requiring universal background checks, refusing even to allow it come up for a vote.
Nevada says it will end investment in companies that make assault-style weapons. Nevada state Treasurer Zach Conine announced Thursday the state will end its investments in businesses that sell or manufacture assault-style weapons in the wake of a string of deadly mass shootings nationwide.
Top Scientist: We Can’t Adapt Our Way Out of This Climate Crisis. “People do not understand the magnitude of what is going on. This will be greater than anything we have ever seen in the past. This will be unprecedented. Every living thing will be affected.”...“Our infrastructure, worth trillions of dollars, built over decades, was built for a planet that no longer exists.”
Ron DeSantis Is Hard at Work Doing Bad Shit. As if that weren’t enough, DeSantis turned his crusade on, uh, the Special Olympics. The organization had a vaccine requirement for the games set to be held in Orlando this weekend. This makes sense, since, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with disabilities might be more likely to get Covid, and those with underlying medical conditions have a higher risk of becoming severely ill. But Florida has a law banning vaccine mandates, which allowed it to threaten the Special Olympics with a $27.5 million fine, according to ABC News reporter Jay O’Brien. Not wanting to stir the pot, the organization dropped its vaccine requirement.
Special Olympics drops vaccine rule after $27M fine threat. The Special Olympics has dropped a coronavirus vaccine mandate for its games in Orlando after Florida moved to fine the organization $27.5 million for violating a state law against such rules.
DeSantis vetoes funds for Tampa Bay Rays practice facility after team tweets on gun control. DeSantis, an avid supporter of gun rights, vetoed the funding proposed by state Sen. Danny Burgess (R) that was widely expected to be signed into the state’s budget a week after the Rays showed support for gun control measures. — Straight up fascism.
Navarro indicted on contempt charges for defying 1/6 panel. Former Trump White House official Peter Navarro was indicted Friday on contempt charges after defying a subpoena from the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Navarro is the second former Trump aide to be charged with contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the Jan. 6, 2021, investigation. Former White House adviser Steve Bannon was indicted in November. The case against him is pending.
Ex-Trump aide Navarro indicted; Meadows won’t be charged. The department’s decision to not prosecute Meadows and Dan Scavino, another adviser to former President Donald Trump, was revealed in a letter sent Friday by a federal prosecutor to a lawyer for the House of Representatives. The move was reported hours after the indictment of Navarro and a subsequent, fiery court appearance in which he vowed to contest the contempt of Congress charges.
“Waiting for America to realize that Bennie Thompson and Merrick Garland were carefully selected for their roles specifically NOT to rock the boat. At a time when America needed two people to sink it.” -- Don Winslow
A majority of Americans — 55% — now consider themselves "pro-choice," the highest percentage in decades, a new Gallup poll finds. The shift can be attributed to the Supreme Court's draft Roe v. Wade opinion...The survey also found that 52% of Americans consider abortion morally acceptable, the first time a majority has expressed that view since Gallup began asking the question in 2001. A record-low 38% call it morally wrong.
Record number of Americans back same-sex marriage as Supreme Court fears grow. Seventy-one per cent of Americans said they support same-sex marriage in Gallup’s annual Values and Beliefs poll, released Wednesday (1 June)...Weekly churchgoers remain the main outlier, with 58 per cent opposing same-sex marriage. -- Stop going to church. They are indoctrinating you to hate others.
Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.
Until next time, my friends. Stay safe and stay sane. Good night.
