And another day of pleading guilty, secretaries of states, mass killing trends, no mental health services in schools, believing there’s an ‘invasion’ at the southern border, flash flooding predicted, cancer, E. coli, security flaws, and streaming comes to a close:

“I’ve covered extremism and violent ideologies around the world over my career. Have never come across a political force more nihilistic, dangerous & contemptible than today’s Republicans. Nothing close.” -- Edward Luce

“I agree. And I was the CIA Director.” -- General Michael Hayden

Judge appears willing to unveil some of Mar-a-Lago affidavit. A federal judge on Thursday ordered the Justice Department to put forward proposed redactions as he committed to making public at least part of the affidavit supporting the search warrant for former President Donald Trump’s estate in Florida. U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart said that under the law, it is the government’s burden to show why a redacted version should not be released and prosecutors’ arguments Thursday failed to persuade him. He gave them a week to submit a copy of the affidavit proposing the information it wants to keep secret after the FBI seized classified and top secret information during a search at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate last week.

The Psychiatrist Who Warned Us That Donald Trump Would Unleash Violence Was Absolutely Right. His belligerent behavior meant more to Lee than it might to a casual viewer. As part of her clinical work in prison settings, she had evaluated and treated hundreds of violent offenders, including leaders of prison gangs. A native New Yorker, she had assumed that Trump “was just a shady businessman,” Lee told me, but “I suddenly realized that he had a lot in common” with those patients. “Trump was engaging in the predatory manipulation of his vulnerable followers.” In some cases, gang leaders might “ask their members to engage in violence and then issue bogus promises of protection. Like Trump, these leaders also often project extreme self-confidence, and that appeals to their followers, who tend to feel a deep emotional need for protection, connection, and identity.”

Trump Organization CFO pleads guilty in tax evasion case. A top executive at former President Donald Trump’s family business pleaded guilty Thursday to evading taxes in a deal with prosecutors that could make him a star witness against the company at a trial this fall. Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg pleaded guilty to all 15 of the charges he faced in the case. In a low, somewhat hoarse voice, he admitted taking in over $1.7 million worth of untaxed perks -- including school tuition for his grandchildren, free rent for a Manhattan apartment and lease payments for a luxury car -- and explicitly keeping some of the plums off the books.

At least 11 Republican nominees for state elections chief have disputed the legitimacy of the 2020 election. Secretaries of state will play a critical role in managing and certifying the presidential election in 2024. The distinct possibility that some of these secretaries will be people with a history of election denial is a major challenge for American democracy -- especially because former President Donald Trump, who is widely expected to run again in 2024, continues to pressure state officials to discard the will of voters.

Mass killings database reveals trends, details and anguish in every US event since 2006. Mass killings take place far more often in private homes than in schools, markets or churches. Mass shootings in which family members are targeted are twice as common as fatal public mass shootings in which strangers are killed. In our database, the public category excludes killings related to drug deals, gang disputes, robberies and other criminal activity. On average, our data shows that five people die in a mass killing of any kind, compared with seven in a fatal public mass shooting. Though these public killings result in more per-incident deaths, other types of mass killings happen more frequently and result in more victims overall…Semiautomatic handguns are far more common in mass killings than guns that are typically classified as assault weapons…According to one study by James Knoll and Ronald Pies in the medical trade publication Psychiatric Times, mass killers are typically angry, aggrieved, emotionally unstable people who seek retribution or revenge for perceived mistreatment, rejection or humiliation. Offenders are often socially isolated and have limited social support…Gun owners are also predominantly white. According to Stone, men tend to be more aggressive and are more prone to violence. Offenders who commit public mass killings tend to be younger. At the same time, most family homicides involve middle-aged men…Mass killers typically target certain people for a number of specific reasons, including a specific event like the end of relationship or loss of a job. Mass killings are rarely indiscriminate. Perpetrators usually plan their assaults for days, weeks or months…The motive for a mass killing is often revenge. Most commonly, the killer seeks to get even with people they know for real or perceived slights…Profiles of mass killers reveal common elements shared by many people in the general population. Countless Americans may be angry, frustrated, reclusive, quick to blame others for their shortcomings, willing post hateful messages on social media sites, or make threats – but relatively few will kill, much less commit mass killings. “One misconception is that they are easy to spot, that a mass killer looks like mass killers are supposed to look,” Fox said. “But that’s not the case. They oftentimes are extraordinarily ordinary, you wouldn’t suspect.”…Several studies confirm that most shooters who kill four or more victims are not psychotic or hallucinatory and haven't been treated for mental health problems. An analysis of Columbia University's mass murder database shows that 11% of all mass murderers had serious mental illness.

Half of all Texas school districts have no mental health services. Uvalde was one of them. Survivors of school shootings said they've tried sounding the alarm about the lack of student mental health services for years, but often felt their concerns were ignored. In Texas, 593 school districts have no school psychologist on staff and do not offer a telehealth option, according to CBS News' analysis of data from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). This leaves more than half a million Texas kids without any mental health services in school.

A majority of Americans see an 'invasion' at the southern border. The poll found that a majority of Americans — including three-quarters of Republicans — say it's either somewhat or completely true that the United States is "experiencing an invasion" at the southern border...Republican leaders are increasingly framing the situation as an "invasion." Immigrant advocates say the word has a long history in white nationalist circles, and warn that such extreme rhetoric could provoke more violence against immigrants...Studies have consistently shown that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes or be incarcerated than native-born Americans. In the NPR/Ipsos poll, a plurality of Republicans answered incorrectly that immigrants are more likely to commit crimes. Republicans were also more likely to endorse rhetoric that echoes the so-called "replacement theory" — the false conspiracy theory that Jews or elites are deliberately replacing white Americans with immigrants and people of color. More than a third of all poll respondents agree that "native-born Americans are being systematically replaced by immigrants" — including more than half of Republicans. Almost half of all Americans say that "Democrats are working to open our borders to more immigrants," with more than 70% of Republicans in agreement. -- Trumpers always need some group of people to hate. They fear non-white people. Probably because they know what they’ve done to non-white people over the years and fear retribution if they themselves become a minority. News flash: white people will eventually become a minority group in the US. Everyone in the world should actually fear white people--especially Trumpers.

After their daughters were beat by a girl in sports, Utah parents triggered investigation into whether she was transgender. After one competitor “outclassed” the rest of the field in a girls’ state-level competition last year, the parents of the competitors who placed second and third lodged a complaint with the Utah High School Activities Association calling into question the winner’s gender. -- These people literally believe men/boys are better at everything than women/girls. Fucking mysoginists. We were warned these things were going to happen after the rush of all these ‘trans sports’ laws happened. And, well, here we are.

Judge limits privilege defense in AZ Mormon sex abuse case. An Arizona judge overseeing a high-profile lawsuit accusing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of conspiring to cover-up child sex abuse has ruled that the church may not refuse to answer questions or turn over documents under the state’s “clergy-penitent privilege.” Clergy in Arizona, as in many other states, are required to report information about child sexual abuse or neglect to law enforcement or child welfare authorities. But an exception to that law — the privilege — allows members of the clergy who learn of the abuse through spiritual confessions to keep the information secret.

Numerous areas of flash flooding likely across the Southwest through the weekend. The desert Southwest, an area dealing with long-term megadrought, is bracing for a moderate risk of extreme rainfall which could lead to flash flooding as we head into the weekend. Nearly 10 million people are under flood watches as widespread rainfall totals of 2-4 inches are expected across Arizona, New Mexico, and southern Utah. Showers and thunderstorms are possible today across this region, but rain chances really increase, especially in terms of heavy rainfall, Friday and Saturday.

Almost half of cancer deaths globally are attributable to preventable risk factors, new study suggests. Globally, nearly half of deaths due to cancer can be attributable to preventable risk factors, including the three leading risks of: smoking, drinking too much alcohol or having a high body mass index, a new paper suggests. The research, published Thursday in the journal The Lancet, finds that 44.4% of all cancer deaths and 42% of healthy years lost could be attributable to preventable risk factors in 2019.

CDC investigating ‘fast-moving’ E. coli outbreak that has sickened dozens. Federal authorities are investigating a “fast-moving” E. coli breakout that was identified in Ohio and Michigan, with nearly 30 people infected by the bacteria from an unknown source.

Apple warns of security flaw for iPhones, iPads and Macs. Apple disclosed serious security vulnerabilities for iPhones, iPads and Macs that could potentially allow attackers to take complete control of these devices...Security experts have advised users to update affected devices — the iPhone6S and later models; several models of the iPad, including the 5th generation and later, all iPad Pro models and the iPad Air 2; and Mac computers running MacOS Monterey. The flaw also affects some iPod models.

We Watched More TV on Streaming Than Cable for First Time Ever, Nielsen Says. Streaming services captured the largest share of television viewing for the first time ever in July, according to data released Thursday from Nielsen, the television ratings authority. Of all the TV watching time in July, 34.8% happened over streaming while 34.4% happened over cable. Broadcast TV captured a 21.6% share of the total.

Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.

Until next time, my friends. Stay safe and stay sane. Good night.
