And another day of passing rules, not being confident, Walz’s master’s thesis, rising abortion numbers, Hollywood taking on Silicon Valley, mpox, astronauts, threats canceling Taylor Swift concerts, and luxury fortresses comes to a close:

“Whose brilliant idea was it to try and get more women to support Trump by making fun of his opponent for placing free tampons in bathrooms and calling him 'Tampon Tim'? It's almost as if Republicans are looking for even more ways to piss Women voters off.  Taking away abortion, telling women without children that they should have less rights and their lead candidate having been found to have raped a woman by a judge must not be enough.” -- Brian Krassenstein

“As far as being a hateful, racist sociopath, I’m not sure how we can help you other than hope you’d get educated and grow a soul. As it is now, you’re wasting your life.” -- John Pavlovitz

Georgia Election Board Passes Rule That Could Delay Election Certification. This is far from the first controversial rule this board has passed. Last month, the board held an illegal meeting to review new controversial election policies. But then nonpartisan watchdog group American Oversight sued them for doing so, which caused the board to withdraw the rules...Sara Tindall Ghazal, the sole Democratic member of the board, expressed her opposition to the rule at the meeting, arguing that “reasonable inquiry” is too vague and allows for “exploitation.” She also said the rule violates state law...Additionally, Georgia Election Board Chair John Fervier read numerous objections from Democratic state legislators, like state Sen. Jason Esteves who said in a letter that “these rules, as proposed, create avenues for malicious actors to disrupt the election process under the guise of addressing discrepancies and could be exploited to sow doubt and distress in election outcomes.” -- The last comment being the whole point of this rule. This will be one way MAGA plans to use to steal the election. MAGA has set it up in swing states for the votes not to be certified if they are not favorable to Trump. Harris/Walz must win with overwhelming numbers. Don’t give America away. Vote Blue!

Biden ‘not confident at all’ that there will be a peaceful transfer of power if Trump loses election. “He means it, all the stuff about if we lose, there’ll be a bloodbath,” Biden said. “You can’t love your country only when you win.”...In the CBS interview, Biden also referred to efforts that could complicate post-election certification processes. “Look what they’re trying to do now, in the local election districts where people count the votes,” he said.

Tim Walz wrote a master’s thesis on Holocaust education, just as his own school’s approach drew criticism. But it’s clear that how to teach the Holocaust well has occupied Walz for decades. In 1993, while teaching in Nebraska, he was part of an inaugural conference of U.S. educators convened by the soon-to-open U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Eight years later, after moving to Minnesota, he wrote a thesis arguing for changes in Holocaust education. And as governor, he backed a push to mandate teaching about the Holocaust in Minnesota schools. Through it all, Walz modeled and argued for careful instruction that treated the Holocaust as one of multiple genocides worth understanding.

US abortion numbers have risen slightly since Roe was overturned, study finds. A major reason for the increase is that some Democratic-controlled states enacted laws to protect doctors who use telemedicine to see patients in places that have abortion bans, according to the quarterly #WeCount report for the Society of Family Planning, which supports abortion access. The data comes ahead of November elections in which abortion-rights supporters hope the issue will drive voters to the polls. In some places, voters will have a chance to enshrine or reject state-level abortion protections.

“F*** These Trump-Loving Techies”: Hollywood Takes On Silicon Valley in An Epic Presidential Brawl. But here’s what’s new. Very recently, just over the past several weeks, there have been signs that Southern California once again is rising — or trying to, at any rate. This time, though, the civil war with the north isn’t over digital platform windows or online content protection; this time, it’s mogul-to-mogul combat on a much grander battlefield, as both sides — super-rich techno libertarians versus not-quite-as-super-rich old guard Hollywood liberals — clash over what sort of government the country should be electing in November. Today, they’re fighting over nothing less than the presidency of the United States. As one studio executive succinctly sums up Hollywood’s new battle cry, “Fuck these Trump-loving techies.”...“We’ve had a decade in which the Musks and Zuckerbergs and Sam Altmans of the world have been defining our culture, and the world is not better for it,” says one well-known Hollywood executive who’s supporting Harris. “These guys already have too much power as it is. We don’t need them setting policy and running the Oval Office. I think this campaign is a chance to even the scales.”

State Dept calls for Israel to investigate allegations of ‘horrific’ sexual abuse of Palestinian detainees. The statement comes after Israeli media obtained leaked surveillance video that allegedly showed Israeli soldiers sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee at Sde Teiman base in Israel’s Negev desert.

Organizers cancel Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna over fears of an attack. Event organizer Barracuda Music said in a post on its Instagram channel late Wednesday that “we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety.” It cited government officials’ “confirmation” of a planned attack at the stadium.

CDC alerts doctors to watch for strain of mpox that's spreading in Africa. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an alert Wednesday for doctors to watch for signs of a more severe strain of mpox that's currently spreading widely in parts of Africa. The agency's alert came hours after the World Health Organization's Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu tweeted that he will be convening a group of advisers to determine whether the mpox outbreak should be declared a public health emergency of international concern. The committee will meet as soon as possible, Tedros said.

Boeing Starliner astronauts have now been in space more than 60 days with no end in sight. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams — two veteran NASA astronauts piloting the first crewed test flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft — have now been in space for 63 days, roughly seven weeks longer than initially expected. There is still no clear return date in sight, and NASA is now making clear that the astronauts may not come home on Starliner at all. SpaceX, Boeing’s rival under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, may be tapped to bring Williams and Wilmore home instead. The move could potentially extend the astronauts’ stay on the International Space Station by another six months, pushing their return into 2025, agency officials said in a news conference Wednesday.

Costco is cracking down on membership moochers. The retailer is implementing stricter policies and cracking down on non-members using other people’s cards by requiring shoppers to scan their membership cards to enter stores...For members with cards that don’t have a photo, Costco says to come prepared with a valid photo ID but encourages shoppers to visit the membership counter and have their photo taken.

Not happy with safe rooms, the super-rich are building luxury fortresses. Few things appear to soothe the existential anxieties of the super-rich like a bunker designed to withstand anything short of total nuclear Armageddon. Yet it’s no longer enough for the security-conscious billionaire to stick an impenetrable safe room in the basement where it might sit empty forever. In today’s uber-prime properties, bunkers have gone seriously upmarket and hi-tech, in some cases growing to the extent that whole homes are becoming 21st century fortresses.

Take a break from all the above chaos you just read, and tune in to 99.9 Waiting for the Comet. The songs you love. The songs you forgot you love. And the songs you don’t yet know you love.

Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.

Until next time, my friends. Stay safe and stay sane. Good night.
