And another day of plans, a ‘very important’ part, replacements, fear of the climate crisis, identical contracts for US Soccer, ending standardized testing, ‘dog bone’ asteroids, and land-roaming whales comes to a close:
“In math, you could get 100 percent. It was very fair. That's what I liked about math. You could figure it out, and the teacher couldn't have a stupid opinion about it.” -- Norm Macdonald

Senate Democrats have reached a deal on a new voting rights bill, which would make Election Day a public holiday and ensure every state offers same-day voter registration. But in an evenly divided chamber, a Republican filibuster could quash the proposal.
Democrats' tax plan would cut bills for most Americans -congressional estimate. U.S. tax code changes sought by Democrats in the House of Representatives to help fund $3.5 trillion in domestic investments would cut annual tax bills for Americans earning less than $200,000 a year through 2025, a congressional estimate showed on Tuesday.
Donald Trump definitely did not win the 2020 presidential election, but nearly six in 10 GOP voters polled by CNN say it’s at least somewhat important for Republicans to continue believing that he did. The poll, conducted over the past month, found that 36 percent Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said insisting Trump won is a “very important” part of being a Republican. Another 23 percent said it’s “somewhat important.” There are a couple different ways to look at this. As CNN notes, those numbers are actually significantly lower than the percentage of Republicans who pointed to “more traditional partisan markers” as core parts of their political identity. I guess that’s what passes for good news about the Party of Lincoln these days: — These people are fucking crazy.
NHL team replaces coach over vaccine refusal. The Columbus Blue Jackets announced Monday that Sylvain Lefebvre would no longer be an assistant coach because of his decision not to get the jab.
Four in 10 young people fear having children due to climate crisis. Nearly six in 10 young people, aged 16 to 25, were very or extremely worried about climate change, according to the biggest scientific study yet on climate anxiety and young people, published on Tuesday. A similar number said governments were not protecting them, the planet, or future generations, and felt betrayed by the older generation and governments.
More Europeans are taking climate change seriously. In the U.S., not so much. In some countries, the number of people "very concerned" about the personal impact of climate change more than doubled. In the U.S., it's flat.
US Soccer says it has offered men, women identical contracts.
DeSantis calls for end to standardized testing in Florida. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Tuesday that the state would replace the "outdated" Florida Standards Assessment with a progress monitoring system that periodically evaluates student performance…The new proposed system would include three shorter tests in the fall, winter and spring in an effort to assess students in "real-time" rather than with a single, longer exam. The new program will require 75 percent less testing time than the FSA testing model, according to the governor's announcement on Tuesday morning.
Olympic marijuana ban to be re-examined after Sha'Carri Richardson's disqualification. While cannabis will remain prohibited in 2022, any changes that stem from the agency's review would not take effect until the following year. This comes after the agency received "requests from a number of stakeholders," the release said.
Slaughter of dolphins on Faeroes sparks debate on traditions. The slaughter of 1,428 white-sided dolphins over the weekend, part of a four-century-old traditional drive of sea mammals into shallow water where they are killed for their meat and blubber, has reignited a debate on the small Faeroe Islands. The hunt in the North Atlantic islands is not commercial and is authorized, but environmental activists claim it is cruel. Even people in the Faeroes who defend the traditional practice worry that this year’s hunt will draw unwanted attention because it was far larger than previous ones and seemingly took place without the usual organization.
Egypt team identifies fossil of land-roaming whale species. The prehistoric whale, known as semi-aquatic because it lived both on land and sea, sported features of an accomplished hunter, the team’s leading paleontologist, Hesham Sallam, told The Associated Press — features that make it stand out among other whale fossils.
New photos of ‘dog-bone’ asteroid reveal that it’s truly weird. Studying unusual asteroids can reveal clues about the solar system — and this is one of the most unusual.
RIP Norm Macdonald. He was 61.
Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.
Until next time, my friends. Stay safe and stay sane. Good night.
