And another day of TX AG Ken Paxton, investigating Cawthorn, the Sixth Amendment is ‘now an empty’ amendment, rejecting FL social media law, increased active shooter incidents, a ‘sign of things to come’ from South Asia, and abuse by Southern Baptists comes to a close:

MAGA Makes the Pilgrimage to Authoritarian Hungary. American conservatives are gathering in Hungary this week to celebrate and swap notes with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a far-right authoritarian who’s successfully undermined democracy in his home country. Got that? Now pause, and read that sentence again. -- The Republican Party has fully embraced fascism.
Seven years later, still no trial for Texas AG Ken Paxton. Not many people charged with felony crimes go seven years without ever standing trial. One of them is Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The twists and turns of how the Republican, who is on the cusp of winning the GOP nomination for a third term Tuesday, has yet to have his day in court after being indicted on securities fraud charges in 2015 has little comparison in American politics. And along the way, it has upended what it means to be a compromised officeholder in Texas.
Why Ken Paxton’s supporters in the Texas attorney general race are unbothered by his mounting scandals. Paxton’s backers say they’re looking past the FBI investigation into Paxton and his felony indictment because he’s a strong conservative advocate fighting the Biden administration. -- So, it’s not about having a decent person in the office, it’s about owning the libs? What a fucking way to think. That’s batshit crazy.

Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina to determine whether he was involved in financial improprieties or had an improper relationship with an individual on his staff, the committee announced Monday.
Supreme Court makes it more difficult for prisoners to argue they had ineffective counsel. In addition, it will make it harder for inmates across the country to prevail on claims that they received ineffective counsel at the state court level in post-conviction proceedings...The 6-3 opinion was penned by Justice Clarence Thomas...The three liberal justices dissented...“To put it bluntly: Two men whose trial attorneys did not provide even the bare minimum level of representation required by the Constitution may be executed because forces outside of their control prevented them from vindicating their constitutional right to counsel,” Sotomayor wrote. She said the Sixth Amendment’s guarantee to the inmates “is now an empty one.”...Ordinarily, an inmate can’t bring new evidence of innocence in federal court when it was the inmate’s fault for not having raised the evidence in state court. But the Supreme Court has previously said if the failure to raise the evidence was due to ineffective counsel in state court – both trial and appellate – the inmate could raise the issue in federal court...“It’s usually difficult, if not impossible, to show that your lawyer was ineffective without introducing new evidence, since that ineffectiveness often turns on evidence that wasn’t introduced,” Vladeck said. “But today’s decision makes it impossible for prisoners to rely upon new evidence to prove that the lawyer representing them in state post-conviction proceedings was ineffective.” -- Republicans don’t care if the evidence is correct or not, or even if the wrong person was convicted or a person was convicted wrongly. They just want someone, particularly a POC, to take the fall and fill their for-profit prisons.
U.S. appeals court rejects most of Florida social media law. Most of a Florida law that sought to stop social media companies from restricting users' political speech violates the companies' free speech rights and cannot be enforced, a federal appeals court ruled on Monday, agreeing with a lower court.
CDC investigating more monkeypox cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating four suspected cases of monkeypox in the United States. All of the cases are in men and related to travel, and there is no evidence the virus has changed to become more contagious, CDC officials said during a media briefing Monday.
Expert: Monkeypox likely spread by sex at 2 raves in Europe. A leading adviser to the World Health Organization described the unprecedented outbreak of monkeypox in developed countries as “a random event” that appears to have been caused by sexual activity at two recent raves in Europe. Dr. David Heymann, who formerly headed WHO’s emergencies department, told The Associated Press that the leading theory to explain the spread of the disease was sexual transmission at raves held in Spain and Belgium. Monkeypox has not previously triggered widespread outbreaks beyond Africa, where it is endemic in animals.
Active shooter incidents increased more than 50 percent in 2021, new FBI data shows. Active shooter incidents in 2021 surged by more than 50 percent from 2020 and nearly 97 percent from 2017, according to new FBI statistics released Monday.
South Asia’s intense heat wave a ‘sign of things to come’. The devastating heat wave which has baked India and Pakistan in recent months was made more likely due to climate change, according to a study by an international group of scientists on Monday. This, they say, is a glimpse of what the future holds for the region.
Southern Baptist members detail alleged grooming, sexual misconduct among clergy in new report. Moments later, she said in the report, Hunt — who is married with two adult daughters close to her age — texted her to come out to her balcony to discuss what had happened. Instead of an apology, she said, he made a proposition that they have sex three times a day...The report detailed widespread allegations of sexual misconduct among named clergy and a cover-up involving the upper echelons of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Southern Baptists face push for public list of sex abusers. A blistering report on the Southern Baptist Convention’s mishandling of sex abuse allegations is raising the prospect that the denomination, for the first time, will create a publicly accessible database of pastors and other church personnel known to be abusers.
Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.
Until next time, my friends. Stay safe and stay sane. Good night.
