And another day of special counsels, the future of the American right, the climate breakdown, FL’s LGBTQ+ students losing safe spaces, soaring heat prices, lab-grown meat headed to the USDA, and no beer at the World Cup comes to a close:

Garland names special counsel to lead Trump-related probes. Attorney General Merrick Garland named a special counsel on Friday to oversee the Justice Department’s investigation into the presence of classified documents at former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate as well as key aspects of a separate probe involving the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection and efforts to undo the 2020 election. The appointment of veteran prosecutor Jack Smith, announced just three days after Trump formally launched his 2024 candidacy, is a recognition of the unmistakable political implications of two investigations that involve not only a former president but also a current White House hopeful.

What it means that a special counsel is running the Trump investigations. The legal jeopardy former President Donald Trump faces in two federal criminal investigations took on a new tenor Friday with the appointment of a special counsel at the Justice Department. -- We shall see.

What Trump vs. DeSantis says about the future of the American right. DeSantis’s governing style isn’t a break with Trumpism, but its evolution. These distinctions are real, important, and, as an intellectual matter, quite interesting. But they should not obscure what this matchup really represents. DeSantis versus Trump is not normalcy versus radicalism. It’s American Orbánism versus the berserk.

A Republican operative was convicted on Thursday of facilitating an illegal campaign contribution from a Russian national to the Trump campaign in 2016.

4 largest cities in America will be led by Black mayors. “As Black mayors continue to win elections this cycle, we are excited that, for the first time, the four largest cities – New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago & Houston – are each led by an African American mayor,” the African American Mayors Association said on Thursday.

Biden administration says Mohammed bin Salman should be granted sovereign immunity in Khashoggi civil case. Court filing says Saudi crown prince’s promotion to the role of prime minister meant that he was ‘the sitting head of government and, accordingly, immune’. — Sovereign immunity is bullshit. It allows bad people to do bad things and be protected from consequences

Our leaders had a final chance to halt climate breakdown. They failed each and every one of us. he chances of any one person being born were calculated by the life coach Dr Ali Binazir. He multiplied the probability of your parents meeting, mating and conceiving by the chances of a particular sperm and egg fusing; of all your human and hominid ancestors reaching reproductive age; and of all them successfully reproducing. He arrived at a figure of one in 10 to the power of 2,640,000. In other words, a 10 followed by 2.6m zeros. It’s an unimaginable, miraculous number. Yet here we are. The chances of being alive right now, as a member of one of the first generations to know the path it is on, and one of the last that can change it, must add several more zeros to this crazy number. The chances of being the president or prime minister of your nation at this critical moment … well you get the idea…The rich world’s governments arrived at the conference in Egypt saying “it’s now or never”. They left saying “how about never?”. We sail through every target and objective, red line and promised restraint towards a future in which the possibility of anyone’s existence starts to dwindle towards zero. Every life is a madly improbable gift. For how much longer will we sit and watch while our governments throw it all away?

Florida's LGBTQ Students And Teachers Are Losing Safe Spaces To Its "Don't Say Gay" Law. “We don’t have a teacher shortage,” Foreman said. “We have a group of human beings that are educated; they’re unwilling to be disrespected and treated like marginalized garbage.”…“Legislative sponsors and Gov. DeSantis made it clear that the intent and effect of the bill is to suppress the ability of gay or transgender students to express themselves, while allowing heterosexual, cisgender students to do so. On its face, it targets LGBTQ children, and discriminates against them — it is a clear violation of Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause of the federal Constitution,” he said. “The broader context of the bill’s enactment — the DeSantis administration’s cutting of funding for LGBTQ homeless youth, or for mental health services for survivors of the Pulse Nightclub Massacre — simply confirms its discriminatory purpose.”…“There are books you can’t read. There are new materials which we could have been learning,” she said. “We're not getting all that we can possibly get from our education.”…Mitchell added that it’s not just administrators enforcing the law. “Students have reported about teachers who are wearing anything rainbow-related. … It’s horrible,” she said. “It’s like the Hitler Youth outing their parents.”…“You feel the sense of danger — like, school does not feel safe. It does not feel as vibrant as it was before,” Mitchell said. “Teachers can’t teach what they want, they can’t call students by their actual name, students are scared to be themselves at school. I mean, how can that possibly be conducive to learning or be a welcoming and fun place?”…Students are frustrated and angry, Foreman said, but most of all, they are scared.

‘It’s like living in an igloo.’ People are turning off their heat as prices surge. As the first frigid weather of autumn chills the Northeast, many people are faced with a tough decision: deal with the surging costs of heating their homes or live without it. Home heating prices are skyrocketing yet again this winter, up 18% nationwide on top of last year’s 17% spike, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA).

Lab-grown meat cleared for human consumption by U.S. regulator. UPSIDE Foods, a company that makes cell-cultured chicken by harvesting cells from live animals and using the cells to grow meat in stainless-steel tanks, will be able to bring its products to market once it has been inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Qatar Bans Beer from World Cup. The host country reversed its decision on permitting alcoholic beverages just days before the event starts. — Got the money. Fucked over the fans

Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.

Until next time, my friends. Stay safe and stay sane. Good night.
