And another day of testing American democracy, ‘slitting throats,’ banning an AP Psychology course, unfair treatment for Blacks seeking medical care, clothes for teens with disabilities, the housing crisis, ‘gray divorce,’ and working 5 lifetimes comes a close:

“Only in America do black folks get arrested for #IncitingARiot, white folks get to run for President.”  — Doris Jackson

Pence: “President Trump Asked Me to Put Him Over My Oath to the Constitution”. Donald Trump is going after his former vice president and fellow 2024 presidential contender, Mike Pence...Pressed by Bash, Pence didn’t rule out supporting Trump if he becomes the Republican nominee. -- Summing up one of the many things wrong with the Republican Party.

Bill Barr says he’s willing to testify against Trump at Jan. 6 trial. Barr, who was appointed by Trump, responded “of course” when asked on CBS’s “Face the Nation” if he would be willing to appear as a witness in Trump’s trial over federal charges related to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. He declined to answer whether he was interviewed by the special counsel in connection to the federal investigation.

Trump and allies boost calls for Justice Dept. takeover in new attack on democratic institutions. That’s a step democracy advocates warn could mark a new assault on the U.S. system should Trump win the presidency a second time...“We have many examples from other countries demonstrating the dangers of a political takeover of law enforcement.” -- You have been warned. Stop voting for Republicans. Vote for Democrats, or else lose democracy. Republicans must be relegated to the trash heap of history.

Prosecutors ask judge to issue protective order after Trump post appearing to promise revenge. The Justice Department on Friday asked a federal judge overseeing the criminal case against former President Donald Trump in Washington to step in after he released a post online that appeared to promise revenge on anyone who goes after him.

Trump cases will stress test American democracy. Critics would contend there is a world of difference between raising questions about an election outcome and pushing for different slates of electors to cast votes in the electoral college process or pressuring a vice president to refuse to certify the result, as Trump and his allies did. But the nation at large seems to be broken into two camps, each living in an entirely different reality. -- Trump didn’t just destroy the Republican Party. He is destroying the American experiment. He literally destroys everything he touches. It appears American democracy will not be an exception.

Ron DeSantis Wants to “Start Slitting Throats on Day One”. During a barbecue campaign event on Sunday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told New Hampshire voters that if he makes it to the White House, he will be “slitting throats on day one” in order to root out the so-called “deep state” lurking in the federal government...Whatever the case, it’s safe to say that these remarks fall in line with DeSantis’ authoritarian approach to governing, using the state to punish his perceived enemies, from Disney to whatever new item he’s declared as “woke.” As Harvard professor Steven Levitsky told my colleague Pema Levy, “That’s authoritarianism at its core. That’s what authoritarians do.” -- Most Republicans have fully embraced authoritarianism. Those that don't, need to get out of the Republican Party and stop supporting it. Republicans should never again be allowed to have government control. They have proven they are a danger to democracy.

A judge has ruled Texas’ abortion ban is too restrictive for women with pregnancy complications. A Texas judge ruled Friday the state’s abortion ban has proven too restrictive for women with serious pregnancy complications and must allow exceptions without doctors fearing the threat of criminal charges. The ruling is the first to undercut Texas’ law since it took effect in 2022 and delivers a major victory to abortion rights supporters, who see the case as a potential blueprint to weaken restrictions elsewhere that Republican-led states have rushed to implement.

Florida effectively bans AP Psychology course over LGBTQ content, College Board says. The state's move to restrict the AP Psychology course comes several months after its decision to block AP African American Studies courses was widely condemned by academics and civil rights activists. The College Board added that Florida will allow superintendents to offer the college-level psychology class for high schoolers if they exclude LGBTQ topics. However, the College Board argued that excluding the lessons — which it describes as teachings on "how sex and gender influence socialization and other aspects of development" — "would censor college-level standards." It added that lessons regarding sexual orientation and gender identity have been included in AP Psychology since the course was created 30 years ago.

Black parents and their children are more likely to experience unfair treatment when seeking medical care, study finds. Researchers found that about 22% of Black parents said they were judged unfairly or mistreated because of their race or ethnicity, language, health insurance type, weight, income, disability or other characteristics. The rate at which Black parents reported this treatment was about 10% higher than parents who are White, Hispanic or who identify as part of other racial groups, the survey found.

What you should know about the latest Covid-19 surge. A doctor explains. That said, I want to emphasize the effectiveness of one-way masking, which means that someone who wants to protect themselves can do so by wearing a high-quality mask, even if others around them are not masked. People at high risk for severe illness, and who otherwise do not wish to contract Covid-19, should mask in order to reduce their risk of contracting the coronavirus and other respiratory illnesses.

You’d have to work five lifetimes to make what your boss makes in one year, report shows. The average CEO compensation among S&P 500 companies last year was $16.7 million — the second-highest level of executive pay ever, according to the group’s annual Executive Paywatch report. (2021 was the highest at $$18.3 million)...To put that $16.7 million in context: Assuming a 45-year career at an average pay of $75,200, regular employees would need to work more than five lifetimes to make what the average CEO receives in a single year.

The first pill to treat postpartum depression has been approved by US health officials. The Food and Drug Administration on Friday granted approval of the drug, Zurzuvae, for adults experiencing severe depression related to childbirth or pregnancy. The pill is taken once a day for 14 days.

Clothes for kids with disabilities get better, but teens see a lack of fashionable options. It’s also about including people with disabilities in the design process, taking care to offer such things as hidden openings for medical ports, tubing and bags, or less bulk in the front and a higher rise in the back of pants for wheelchair users. Dressing without help is made easier with things like pull-on loops at the sides of skirts and pants, and wider necks on pullover shirts. Shoes must be wide and sturdy enough on the inside to accommodate braces or prosthetics. Zippers or other fasteners make them easier to put on for people without full use of their hands.

‘The police see us as disposable’: what life’s really like in New York’s maligned ‘red light district’. As rightwing media and the mayor target a Queens neighborhood, sex workers say they’re just trying to survive. Sex work has always been a service industry at the edges of society, and in Queens, it’s often inextricable from the immigrant experience. Many sex workers’ clients are also undocumented people – “workers who are in construction, people who may be all alone in this country and are looking for company”, says Guerrero. “What many of the sex workers that I work with talk about is how often the men cry. Or they talk about how lonely they feel. So it’s not just sexual services, but sometimes it’s like a conversation to release some of the emotional things that are coming up for them.” It also points to why there are growing numbers of visible sex workers in Queens: more people are struggling.

The invisible laws that led to America’s housing crisis. Strict single-family zoning regulations limited housing supply, artificially raised prices, squandered the dream of homeownership for future generations, and blocked families from moving into neighborhoods with better schools and job opportunities, researchers and advocates say.

More Baby Boomers are living alone. One reason why: ‘gray divorce’. Rather than “gray divorce,” Myres says she prefers the term “silver splitters,” because it also alludes to the silver lining of starting fresh, no matter how old you are...But many older people who are living alone haven’t gone through “gray divorce.” Some are widowed, and a growing share have never been married at all...The share of people over 65 who are living alone has remained relatively consistent in recent years, hovering around its current level of 28%. But given the large size of the Baby Boomer generation, which includes people who range in age from 59 to 77, the overall number of older people living alone is climbing, and it’s expected to grow even more...By 2038, most people 75 and older are likely to live alone.

Forget the lantern fly. A mysterious new pest has scientists sounding the alarm. Beech leaf disease has quietly raced across the country infecting a particular species of trees critical to forest ecosystems, the American beech. The mysterious condition has been shown to be caused by a newly discovered subspecies of nematodes, or microscopic worms.

Taylor Swift makes 'generous' donation to Seattle food bank. Food Lifeline said Taylor Swift and her team asked for the donation sum to be kept private, but the organization described the donation as "quite generous."

'Barbie' joins $1 billion club, breaks record for pic helmed by female director. In modern box office history, just 53 movies have made over $1 billion, not accounting for inflation, and “Barbie” is now the biggest to be directed by one woman, supplanting “Wonder Woman’s” $821.8 million global total.

US loses to Sweden on penalty kicks in its earliest Women’s World Cup exit ever. The Americans’ bid to win an unprecedented third consecutive title ended Sunday on penalty kicks. It is the earliest exit in tournament history for the United States, four-time winners of the World Cup.

Twitter commandeers @music handle from user with half a million followers. The move on the part of the social media company raises questions about the worth of a handle on its platform. X terms of service, last updated in May, say, "We may also remove or refuse to distribute any Content on the Services, limit distribution or visibility of any Content on the service, suspend or terminate users, and reclaim usernames without liability to you." The threat of losing a handle may make it hard for creators to trust the platform enough to build there long-term, Vaught said.

Life’s short. Live, love, create, and help others.

Until next time, my friends. Stay safe and stay sane. Good night.
